Alright...
Well, basically, BF2 lags like a whore. A fat fat whore on my computer.

Here are my specs:

Intel pentium 4 2.8GHz Processor
640 MB RDRAM (yay)
Radeon 9800 pro

Yay.

Takes 3-4 minutes to load a map.
As soon as I get into the game, I have this 30 second period where nothing moves as my computer takes in all of the load.
Then, After It starts moving at about 5 FPS I spawn and get killed by tanks/artilery/snipers
After getting somewhat some controll, I lag all over as my comp loads the map as I go through it.
After about 10 minutes of pain, the game runs smooth and nice, and I love it.

It hurts.

I just wanna stop this crap, and I'm willing to throw away some graphics (/cry) for it
Here are my settings:

Basically, what should I use to give me maximum efficiency so I don't fucking lag so much, but doesn't turn BF2 into a blurry, jagged hell?

The best thing you can do right now is upgrade the RAM.

If you have another empty DIMM slot, you can buy a 512mb stick of RAM for like 50$ from a computer store (like Best Buy, Circuit City, whatever). That will help A LOT.

Okay...I thought I would get these replies

Anyway...

What settings should I lower to make it run faster? Is lowering them ALL overkill, or should I just lower a few?

Ya, definately buy some RAM.  I was running on 512 before and maps would take forever to load, and lag like hell when you first got in.  I bought two Kingston 512 sticks from circuit city for only $58, and after installing them im now running on 1.5 gigs.  Game runs so smooth now.

Drop the resolution to either 800x600 OR 640x480, with ALL of your effects to LOW and AA off. Get more RAM (this game really needs 1GB), and save up for a better PC

anything to do with textures... go to low... also definitely shadows and lite go to off... also resolution helps to be lower...

those are the things that really affect load time.. besides that.. get a new comp =/

Take all settings to rock bottom for starters.  After that you can experiment raising one at a time until performance suffers.

I went from 512mb to 1.5gb of RAM on my computer...and it made a huge difference.  In the meantime, you can just drop down your resolution and notice huge results.  For right now..you have 2 choices to do the least amount of damage to your graphics
1) drop the resolution and keep your other current settings or
2) keep your resolution and put everything else on low

But seriously...do your system a favor...get at least a gig of ram.

Perhaps a new Videocard. Make sure you got AGP because 9800 Pro is AGP. Get a 128 MB 6600 GT. Make sure you buy the XFX version...MORE POWER!

I used to play on high because i like things pretty....few weeks ago i put it on low after some frustrating fps drops on leviathan.

It helped a shitload (altho it did nothing for the fps drops on leviathan )

my old machine i managed a 1.4 Pentium 4 (yes, Pentium 4 1.4) 512 "RDRAM" to run everything on low w/o AA with no problems.  RDRAM cost a lot so i recommend either 1) getting a new computer 2) run everything on low
or change ur motherboard if it'll support DDR ram.  I upgraded recently to a Pentium D 805 OC 3.47, 2gb ram.
and the difference cannot even be explained.  Good Luck

Low ALL of them... And let the resolution as it is... I'm playing with everything low, only view distance on 100% and resolution 1280*1024 and rounds start quickly, no problems with FPS...
