Simple question, what gives best performance...
Seagate Barracuda or Western Digital Raptor (or Western Digital Raptor X)

Thanks

Raptor X is very loud... RAIDing hard drives is better. i would say raptor for performance, but i wouldnt get it. seagate barracuda's in RAID are better

raid 0 is for speed wheres raid 1 is for back up, now i dont know much about raid, but what i do know its cheaper per GB than raptor

Yeah
Level 0 -- Striped Disk Array without Fault Tolerance
Level 1 -- Mirroring and Duplexing
I have Raid 0 (2 X 120GB HD gives a good for performance, but if your array falls over, yeah you lost ALL your data...... so what I do is keep another HD for back up.
also cyborg_ninja-117  is correct when saying its cheaper then a raptor

Thanks

Yeh i know the difference and that between 1 and 0, but was wondering if you knew about the difference between fakeraid and software raid?

This is my problem:

"I have a Dell 9150 set up with 2 250 GB Western Digital hard drives in RAID 1. Afer problems trying to set up a dual boot with windows XP and Kubuntu i think ive found out that im using a fakeraid that came bundled with the Dell motherboard.

Basically i was wondering whether you think its best to try a long winded work around, or try to ditch the fakeraid and set up a software raid. As you can see i think i prefer the software option, but im just a newbie to this sorta thing and so want your expert opinions!

How do i go about ditching the fakeraid and setting up the sofware raid? What steps do i take? Do you think software raid is better than fakeraid generally? Will having a software raid instead of a fakeraid make it easier in hard drive detection of my raid 1 array when installing further operating systems?

Thanks for the input"

what do you want the hard drive for? performance? go for the raptor. storage? go for the barracuda. the barracuda gives a slower access time than the raptor but its quieter than the raptor. Im buying a raptor right now actually .

you cant create dual boot windows coz its in raid 1... coz in raid 1 its copying all the data across

I didn't notice a differance in the noice of my Raptor.  WD is very good, however I have not used the seagate so I cannot compare.
