I played a bit of '42 recently, and did one of my favorite things: jumped in a Wespe and (alongside another one) shelled the hell out of an enemy base from a ridge... then I realised that this is something I really think '42 has over BF2.

I don't like the fixed artillery much. I don't like that it fires by itself, and can hit anywhere on the map. What I think would be much more fun is... self propelled guns! They would have to be manned, and moved into position to hit certain distances/points on the map. The commander could issue an order about where to fire, but the SP driver would have to actually hit the target.

They could also engage tanks! They could be stolen from the enemy team! I think it would add strategy and fun to the game in a way that is lacking with the static artillery strikes. What do you guys think?

YES!!! THIS IS WHAT IT NEEDS! Arty right now is SHIT because it can WIPE your whole team in one strike and its CHEAP.

I totally agree with you, i say we bring back the days of the spotter and moble Arty(makes me wanna play DC agian), i gotta say it gets old when you're trying to sneak around the map and the enemy commander drops fire from the sky.

Oh man...check out the Desert Conflict mod for BF2.....

It is essentially DC redux for the new engine, but not by Trauma Studios. One of their latest renders was a laser designator for infantry, which leads me to believe that it is the next generation of using a scout to spot enemies and call in artillery. I am very much looking forward to that.

I've always advocated a broader range of artillery stuff....such as giving the US ship-based arty and giving the Chinese something like an anti-ship missile, just to shake things up....They would be balanced, but just delivered in a different way.

mmmmmm....I can imagine now.....you see a 105mm Howitzer rolling across a ridge line, and all of a sudden the barrel begins to aim down at you....do you feel lucky punk?  Great idea, I would love to shell the hell out of my enemies.....and me being a sniper who doesn't like anything else, would love if someone made a mod with self-propelled artillery........plzzzzzzzzzzz.

And maybe to prevent an overbalance, the self-propelled guns would require maybe like a 2 man crew to fully operate the cannon, with the 2nd guy just there to help "reload the artillery," where he would actually just be able to use his gun like on the AA vehicles.  Good idea by the way oberst_enzian, +1 for creativity.

Imagine how bad it would be if it was the REAL thing. Anything it hit would be GONE off the map. Arty on the hotel? What hotel? There IS no hotel left after an artillery strike like that. Mobile artillery would be great because its not as powerful, it can immobilize armor, and its not coming straight down on you all the time so if your on a roof your safe.

Self propelled arty would be good, better even except the commander wouldn't always get people in it and even less people that actually put it where he tells them too, but the arty the way it is now isn't bad.

And please stop crying nerf.

i never said to nerf anything - i am talking about adding something, not taking something away or changing what exists. I just think mobile artillery would be more fun is all.

i think it would be a great addition in some maps, or would have been perfect in AF.  Maybe in the maps its been added remove 1 commander artillery piece to balance.

Problem is people would use them as tanks and drive through karkand and reg tanks wouldnt have a chance.

so to solve this problem, the mobile arty could be featured only on certain maps eg. more open maps such as: Dragon Valley, Operation Clean Sweep, Kubra Dam, and other non-urban maps.
If there was mobile arty I think should be almost exactly like the ones from DC:
two man crew (driver and gunner)
Slow moving turret.
5-6 second reload time.
Infantry caught anywhere in the blast radius are killed.
Light vehicles (DPVs, transport vehicles, etc) caught within 5m(?) of the center are destryed. Plus passengers in open seat cars like DPVs and FAVs take damage as infantry do.
I could go on further but I think you get the picture. Basically the blast from such a weapon could be compared to that of the laser missile's found on the SU...yeah I think that would sufice.
But again--like the pilot kit that was talked about a few days ago--I doubt that EA will put such a vehicle into the game.  Expect it to be in an upcoming mod.

I would also like to see Infantry equiped with binoculars to spot the precise targets.
Maybe the mobile artillery could be a rocket launcher like the ones of the MEC in DC.

now if you're talkin about the Grail SAM then I'm totally with you there.
An shoulder mounted SAM would be a generous gift for the AT class. Perhaps it could be wrapped in the form of an unlock?

I miss self-propelled arty, i it helped with ambushing enemy tank collums cause you didnt have to wait 15 seconds for the first shell to hit after you called for it. It would also call for more maps, cause most of the maps are too small or too flat for S.P.G's* to be affective. We need bigger maps like El-Alamein or Battle of the Bulge where S.P.G's were valuable assets to teams. I also miss arty spotting, arty spotting would make snipers a little more useful than easy knife kills (unless of course they are skilled snipers). IMO you should need to be able to 'spot' a target so if the commander targets it for a strike, the first shell lands on target or the strike is more concentrated on the 'spotted' target.
