You have to go into your motherboard bios and select which HD is your primary HD. Thats how my motherboard works. Should be something like this...

1. CD-ROM
2. HD
3. None
4. None

There is also a seperate menu for select which HD boot order you want.

1. SATA1 Device
2. EIDE Device
3. External HD(If you have one, I do.)
4. None

How does it run, look. What kind of system are you running?

Pentium D 830
ASUS P5ND2 SLI
Mushkin 2 x 1GB DDR667
BFG7800GT x EVGA 7800GT

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

i had a look in the bios but it didn't give options to select a hdd for primary or slave.
it just told me what is what.

the one vista is on is set to slave via the jumper jacks on it as the xp hdd was always the primary, also i noticed when I'm on vista it is c: and xp is on d: yet now I'm on xp and it is c: and vista is d:, i didn't think it could just change like that?

to get into xp i just unplugged the power from my vista hdd and it booted xp like normal.

there is a program you can download from the vista site that asesses your system and recomends what to run.

i have 64x vista running on

amd athlon 64 3400+
2 gig ram
200 gig hdd
7800gs agp graphics card

and it gives me a system rating of 4 out of 5

i read that a guy only had 2 out of 5 and it still ran fine.

also what antivirus are you guys running? i cant get the two they recomend to work properly.

EDIT, UPDATE : i just installed it ont he same hdd as my xp install on a new partition. now i can select what i want to boot. working like a chram now.

I'm only going to jump onto the Vista bandwagon when I see obvious advantages for doing so. For now, all the extra GUI stuff just amounts to a pile of neat-looking bloatware.

I hate it coz theres no X-Fi drivers for it and i BSOD alot in it

Same, using a Netgear Router here.

Ok, problem. Burnt the image to disk and began installing. It goes to the bit, upgrade or new install and only let me new install, so then you choose where to install and in the little box there was nothing! I couldnt install it anywhere. The only options i had were refresh and find drivers (which wanted me to put in a cd with some drivers to find my HDD).

Any ideas?
Im trying the 64 bit version. I have an Intel Pentium D 8** and 2 x 250GB HDD RAID 1 (Mirror)

It needs the drivers for the RAID chipset. Did you mobo come with drivers for them? Also my Vista won't boot after installing again last night. It started happening after I installed firefox... go figure. LOL

Just come off the phone to a work colleague who's put it on his machine at home. I wanted to know if it was worth trying. It seems not. He's running a very top spec PC, Intel P4 Extreme (don't know which one but knowing him, probably the best you can get!), 4Gb of Ram and apparently it runs like a dog. Even at idle, with no other software loaded on, just Vista, the CPU's running at a constant 10% and he's got just over 3 Gb of ram left. Oink Oink. System hog alert.

Although the download is very large, it is not indicative of the final size of the OS when it will be released. The Beta version is the full 'Ultimate' edition with all the bells and whistles contained in the different versions so it can be fully evaluated.

I won't be putting this on my gaming rig as even with XP pro, before firing up BF2, I go through all the processes and shut down everything I don't need, with the exception of the firewall and critical Windows stuff. Vista will just make that tiresome job even more hassle.

Be aware that this is, as obvious as it is, a beta software. Things will be unstable and may consume more system resources than normal. Added to the fact that it uses fancier graphics, the overall resource consumption will add up.

This is Beta 2... it's not final code. When we get to Release Candidates, then you can start your OS performance criticisms then. By then, most show-stopping bugs would have been ironed out.

For now, this is just something we'd like to play with... we take our chances and we see if the new OS will be worth the purchase in the long run. I still would like to see what works and what doesn't... I'll have to modify that template a bit in regards to x64... but then, it'd be really nice if you can add that information appropriately by yourselves.

Has anybody got BF2 to work on Vista with a ATI card. I'm having no luck. I have a AIW 1900, and Vista beta2 and ATI Vista beta drivers. Vista's pretty, but if I can't play my primary game, then what good is it.

Try Dell's website, then try google or yahoo. Try looking for your CHIPSET drivers not Dell's drivers when searching. Do it simlar if you mobo had an nForce chipset you could go to the mobos webiste or you can go to nVidia's nForce site and download all in one drivers.

Well the biggest problem with Vista is the lack of drivers. Unlike Windows XP at launch, Vista requires almost all new drivers for all hardware. That means lets say my capture card for instance. It had drivers writen for Win98 and XP but, is no longer support by the manufacuter. That means I am SOL for drivers for my capture card. So they major problem is most people with computers that are not supported anymore will suffer.

As for my problem I will post a solution once I find one. I really hate something as simple as Firefox to be causing the problem but, lets hope not.

actaully after i installed my g15 drivers i rebooted and it said no operating system present.
great!! but i just booted fromt he vista disk and it found and fixed the problem by itself which was nice.
only prob xp still doesnt boot and i catn find my damn disk!!!

and one thing i found that i hate is when you turn off the account protection, ie: the boxes that keep popping up whenever you do anything like delete or move a file.
you get stuck with the warning shield in the icon tray telling you you havnt got the recomended settings on.

Yea I am seeing some goods and bads from Vista. The goods would be the way Vista can get drivers. Windows acually looks for drivers. I mean in XP your better off installing the drivers manually then trying to get then from XP from the net. The bads would be Vista is very sensitive to software changes.

On another note I believe I found the problem to my startup failure.

I would use Windows Live Messenger if you are having problems much better and I heard it works just fine with Vista but I have yet to try it.

its free and it helps with boot probs.

i havnt installed it yet so i cant say if it does anything good.
