I did a search and was surprised that this hadn't been asked - it's a classic debate topic and I am anxious to hear what you folks would do/say.

You hit a time warp - you find yourself on a roof top in about-to-become Nazi Germany, around 1934. You also have your favorite sniper rifle, your Expert Sniper badge and a clear head shot at Hitler.

Do you take the shot?

What if it's 1924? Does that change your mind?

It wouldn't be possible, if hitler had died there, you would never have had the reason to go beck, hence never gone back.

But in theory, I wouldn't because then something else would have happened, possible worse.

If you did kill him then we wouldn't have great movies like Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List and Der Untergang (Downfall). Not to mention the fact that the History Channel would have to seriously rethink it's programming schedule.

i would have to say i would not have taken the shot if i had the knoledge i have today, war would still have gone a head, i would propably have taken a shot at one of his hench men out instead. But he would just have been replaced with another insane arse kisser, so i might have just sneaked back away and stuck my golden bullet in something very explosive in one of the major oil refinerys as that would have slowed down the nazi war machine a bit.

No. But the fact that we now know that we are capable of this sort of mass evil is important. We have weapons capable of erasing many more than 6 million now. We could kill billions. You could make the argument that without the war, we wouldn't have those weapons, but it's not true. We had the info before the war, no one had acted on it yet though.

If we had to learn this lesson now...

We might not survive as a species.

Movies are not worth more than lives. The lessons we learn from them might be.

No, hitler was a terrible leader militarily, and history has shown that if the assasination plot carried out by his senior officers at work the war would have taken much longer than it had, and Germany may have won.
