My friend is trying to figure out what parts to throw together to make his new rig. Here are the specs:

-ENERMAX Liberty ELT500AWT ATX12V 500W
-ABIT KN8 SLI
-AMD Athlon 64 3700+
-Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin 400 (PC 3200)
-eVGA Geforce 7600GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI-E x16
-Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s

Any recommendations?

not everyone can afford that?
that said i wouldn't get anything below a 78 series 7 card to be truthful they're not built for gaming

i agree

but i would suggest AM2 since ddr2 ram is the future and its easier to upgrade with it.

7600 GT retails at around £120-£150 at my trusted supplier, while the 7900GT is upwards from £200 (ASUS' base spec version)

I'd say it's definitely worth the extra cash - perhaps save a bit on the processor and go for 4x512Mb RAM instead of 2x1Gb, if money is tight.

2X1gb is better since if ur gonna upgrade in the future, its a hell lot better when memory hog vista comes out

I'm not a huge fan of Abit motherboards, although they aren't all bad, I think that DFI and Asus are better.

What is the budget your friend has to work with?  We can keep recommending parts, but if we overestimate then the work was useless.

That being said:

processor should be fine, although I would probably get dual core now.
2x1gb > 4x512 (doesn't need to run in 2T and should cost the same... if not cheaper) - although I am not a big fan of Kingston anymore, I will recommend the G.Skill PC4000 'HZ sticks, Mushkin, and OCZ sticks.
The 7900gt is the best bang-for-the-buck card out there right now.
Excellent PSU btw.

G.skill has the cheapest ram... especially ddr2

lol but cheap ram isn't necessarily good....
I'd probably go for SLi on dual 6800's or get a 7900 and leave a chance for upgrade.

I don't believe he means value ram.  I have two 1gb sticks of G.Skill PC4000 and they overclock very well (270mhz, 3-4-4-8) which made a bit of an inrease over my previous Mushkin PC4000 Redlines (2x512)

SLI isn't really worth it, it would be better to just get the 7900gt.

Oh. lol my bad.
I disagree on SLi not being worth it as I build a system for a friend with a Asus A8N (i don't remember the exact mobo) half a year ago. anyhow, it has one 7900gt and he just got another one. In terms of upgrade, I think it's well worth a few extra bucks.
If you don't have enough money, i've seen dual 6800 Oc'ed w/ better performance that a 7900 and at a slightly lower price .

Maybe if he's using a 30 inch screen!
A single 7900gt can run well over 60fps (probably over 80) at high settings on a standard 1280x1024 (19") screen.  I'm running around 100fps with my 7800gt with all settings on high except those that help me see (shadows, lighting etc)... so I don't see how a 2nd 7900gt will help.  The difference between 100fps and 180fps is not good for anything.

Getting a 7600GT right now is a smart move, why spend the extra for the 7900 when DX10 cards are right around the corner.

You will be pissed when you sell off your 7900 for half, compared to selling the 7600 for half.

seeing how DX10 won't be usable until Vista comes out (2007) I think that a 6/7 month wait (at least) is okay to get the 7900gt.

What are you guys talking about?  I have a 7600GT and I love it.  Was the best decision I could have made for the money.  I even got a free game with it.(Which is not too uncommon.)

No you don't, but if you plan on keeping the computer for a decent length of time, it would help. AM2 stuff is also pretty much the same price as 939. DDR2 is cheaper.

The problem with the X2 chips, they arent the great for gaming.  Low L1 & 2 cash.  Dont get me wrong they are nice and fast when multi tasking such as in Photoshop etc. But bang per buck its not worth it for a gaming setup.

I have a 754 3700 Clawhammer OC @ 2.52. Right now its $325 w/ shipping,  I would upgrade to a  939 4000 Clawhammer That's $339 w/ free shipping.

I will never buy another Abit board!!  I have had 3 seprete models break.  Go with an Asus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! like either a K8N or A8N5X.   As for memory look at the timings,  The best deal right now is on Geil 1gb 3200 chips $94 w/ shipping

And as far as video.  Im running an AIW X800XT with 256DDR3 GPU 500/Mem 1000.   I would make sure what ever card you go with has atlest 500/1000 with DDR3 mem.

As far as the HDs go,  Sata and 8mb cash with 7200rpm (2 Western digital 80gb 8mb cash, 7200rpm Sata150 or3.0)

Cooling,  use artic silver 5, with a thermaltake heat pipe technology with the biggest fan you can find,  Im running a 120mm.

Good luck on this, if you have any more qustions on configuring a gaming machine let me know.  I have built over 30 badass towers that all run BF2 nicely

Wow they are alot cheaper then I thought.

I must of been thinking about the new Intel 975 boards which are supposed to support later version of the Conroe Core.

DDR2 is cheaper for faster bandwith... AM2 isnt so bleeding edge, but having DDR2 ram would make it a hell lot easier when u want to have a future upgrade, lets say conroe or AMD's K8L cpus

If that's true, I would buy a 7600GT now, then when a nice DX10 card comes out, buy it, even though you can't even use the full benefits of it until Vista.

If you have the money and don't care how outdated the 7900 will become, buy the 7900 now for all means.

Scratch that idea if DX10 cards come out with the Vista release.

Doesnt really matter... I would probably go with 939 64 right now, cause AM2 is new and prob buggy, immature.

I agree with you on that.  I have read a couple of places that the newest ATI cards will be capable to run with DX10 with a patch, but that may take some reasearch to find that out.

Ok, my buddy read all the replies and came to the conclusion that it wouldn't be worth it to purchase a whole new system with all the new technology coming out the following year.

He basically wants something to tide him over until DX10 is out, so he can just build his system then.

His current computer was a gift, so it's...ok. It's a Dell Dimension 8200 (4+ years old?). System Specs:

P4 2.53GHz w/ 533MHz FSB

512MB RDRAM 184-Pin (16bit PC800)

Nvidia GeForce 4600ti 128MB DDR2

It's old, but it's still somewhat decent. He says the main bottlenecks are the RAM and the Video Card, so he wants to upgrade those. He's thinking about the 6800xt since it includes Shader Model 3.0, while the ATIs x800 series cards do not. Also, doubleing his RAM would be a good step forward. He's unsure what his current PSU is capable of, so he's considering upgrading that aswell.

Basically, what are your thoughts on just upgrading his shitty computer to an ok computer, so he can continue gaming until the newer tech comes out?
