After some practice with a friend, and getting him his aviator ribbon through use of it, I have come to the following conclusion.

The guided missiles on the fighter bombers are the most powerful weapon in the game.

Screw the dumb bombs.

The guided missile is a one hit kill on ANY ground vehicle or sam site. It has a huge area of effect, and can be used with our without a lock.

Its area effect will devastate even infantry or nearby lightly armored vehicles on a miss.

After a couple of rounds with it, ( WIth MUCH help from excellant interceptor pilots keeping their air cover off of us), the enemy team was simply not getting in vehicles anymore. They were hoofing it the long distances from flag to flag on daqing, because getting into a vehicle was suicide.

BUT, it can be hard to use, and I have seen some conflicting information on how to use it properly. I have even seen some inane things like 'use it from a steep dive'.

Simply put, here are the tips to using this most heinous weapon.

AS THE GUNNER:

Keep facing forward
Fire as soon as you get a lock,
dont be afraid to fire before you get a lock if you have a decent angle on a target.
be  in same squad as pilot TELL HIM WHEN YOU FIRE ( that part is important)

AS THE PILOT:
Use the bomb sights to find occupied ground vehicles.
Approach the targets slow enough for gunner to fire ( this can be relatively fast with a well-practiced gunner)
Keep your nose just above the target so the gunner camera can see and lock.

Heres the tricky part:
Fly level once the missile is launched until it hits ( you will hear it hit, its quite loud).
Even with a lock, jerking the plane up, or touching rudders will send the missile veering off.

Done correctly, ANY ground vehicle is simply meat waiting to be cooked. Even wildly maneuvering buggies and jeeps just die. Air defense tanks, get to launch MAYBE one sam before the missile slams into them.

Best part of using them? the gunner gets like 12 missiles, thats 12 dead vehicles before you have to reload.

Much agreement here. That thing is flat out deadly if you are lucky enough to have a pilot who is smooth enough to allow you to use it. Some good tips!

Great tips!!

Indeed.....This weapon is extremely fun to use, but like voodoochild said it all depends on your pilot.

I have tried this with many different gunners, and sometimes with more luck than other times!

I am the pilot, and was wondering, when you say level as soon as the gunner shoots?

does that mean that if you are in a slight dive when he shoots, i oughta jerk it up just a little to fly horizontal, or to continue the slight dive until the hit????

Thanks for the great tips though!

I have some questions:

1) Does a lock on happen simply by floating the aimpoint over a target until the larger circle appears on it?

2) If you are locked on, can you simply just fire then exit the camera screen so the missile files there by its self?

3) I've been in the bomber position, fired, and even with a lock and a good pilot, my missles decied to go the complete opposite directon. Whats up with this?

Having a good pilot in a bomber is tough. They are usually more interested in dogfighting instead of ground targets.I got my Crew service ribbin as a bombardier on Daqing oilfields. The Pilot was really smooth and we only died 2 or three times.I agree with you guys the missile is devastating.I love gunning in any arial vehicle. If any of you need a gunner hit me up im down.

1) Yes.

2) No.

3) Your pilot must have not been as good as you think, or you stopped aiming at the target and lost the lock.

To be specific, either the pilot must have moved the jet after the launch, or the jet was turning at launch, throwing the laser designator off.
For the pilot, waiting till he hears the boom to peel off can be nerve wracking, especially if something large is appraching fast, or someone is shooting at him.

What I find works best, was slamming on full reverse before the launch, just short of stalling. This gave me the most room to maneuver, even if I had to ride the afterburners to get back to speed.

With practice, you can do some really spiffy moves.

At one point I put myself intentionally into a stall to get a good angle on an aa tank wedged into a corner of the dam on kubra.

I can't stress this enough, but done correctly you can pretty much eliminate enemy armor as a factor.
To put it bluntly, you can kill enemy tanks/jeeps/apcs quicker than they respawn.

If nobody want (or cant) fly with you int he big planes, youcan use the LASER missile alone. Use afterburner to go on a target, then press F2 (before you can spot target in pilot), and then shot. With enough speed, you'll have enough time to press F2, lock, fire, press F1 and increse speed again. It is a little harder, but it is a good idea if you have dropped all your bombs and you want to kill an movig AA before fly to your base to reload.

When your friends leave a vehicle, you see it with a green square for a few seconds (the same as an ennemy tank). I think it is the same for ennemies.

Yea the missiles are awsome, usually when i get someone to be my gunner, steals my kills always. not fun...

But hey guys, would you like a heli or a jet piloting guide? I could do one with pictures also. Including the importance of gunners!
