German cars are awful to maintain and service. And they have so many problems too. Would not buy one used with 30k miles on it.

My wife thought that you just had to pour more oil in the engine. The concept of changing the oil was completely foreign to her until about five years ago. I don't know how she got through the first ten years of her driving career.
If 'mericans find euro cars hard to maintain, and don't know that you have to change the oil from time to time maybe that's why euro cars end up with problems at low mileages.
Actually many cars ought to be able to go 50-100,000 miles on the same oil, as long as the piston rings and filter are working well, you drive sedately and its quality oil not that much really changes. Oil changes are largely to get you into the dealership and spending money - 'because if you don't your car will die'.
Problems are often created during maintenance, the manufacturers put a lot of effort into extending spark plug and oil life to minimise opening the system during the warranty period because they know the monkeys will drop some dirt in and ruin the engine.
Hence the cartridge oil system for one, which takes the monkeys out of the equation to some extent.
