I think it is a deterrent, yes. What keeps people honest? For many, it's the fear of getting caught or hurt. If guns were stripped from society I guarantee there would be a dramatic uptick in crime. There just aren't enough cops, and we can't afford to pay more.

I bet if you made it compulsory to safely store your weapons, people would do it out of fear of being caught and less would be stolen and there would be less gun crime etc etc.

You could afford more cops if you cut the military, and paid cops military wages - which is what they're worth really.

Its win-win, win-win-win if it means you don't need to provoke regular wars to justify having a bloated military and to disguise your real unemployment rate with workfare.

At least they'd be doing useful workfare.

It doesn't make sense and it never does. We can all agree here that criminals are the ones we want to keep guns away from. They can obtain weapons easily even if there are strict gun laws. Why bother making it hard for law abiding citizens to get what they want? If I want an AR-15 here in California I will get a lousy welded-in magazine so that I have to open the upper receiver anytime I want to reload. A criminal can still fire thirty rounds it's retarded.

You aren't getting it, either through narrow mindedness or through sheer dumb dumbness. It's not about making it harder (because it isn't any harder), it about making a firearm owner RESPONSIBLE for his firearms. Do this, and over time the amount of illegal weapons used in crime will reduce, like it has here in AU, to pretty much just organised crime. Because people don't want a weapon tied to them used in a crime, they take better care of it, which means less kids dead, less accidental shootings, less thefts. Organised crime doesn't break into John Citizen's house. And you still get to keep your guns.

It works everywhere else, and everywhere else you can still have gunzz.

Please tell me how giving AR-15s fixed magazines and not allowing me to put a pistol grip and retractable stock on my mini 14 makes me more responsible. I can't own a pistol yet but anybody over 21 here can buy a 7 round 1911. They can't get a double-stacked 14 round magazine though because obviously only criminals use those.

You're missing my point Jeakus. Yes, I can own a gun, a nice bolt-action hunting rifle. What if I want a fully automatic AR-15 with a drum magazine and a ton of tannerite to have fun with in the desert? Yes Jeakus, yes, I can most definitely get that. I will only need a few ten of thousands of dollars for permits and the weapon itself because of government regulation. Will criminals have easier access to higher powered weaponry? Yes, but so will we.

Criminal bought the guns in another state
etc.

None of what you're saying isn't a big deal would have helped keep those kids alive. It's penalizing people for something they didn't do and it wouldn't help anyway. Illonois is trying to pass some crazy shit right now that won't help either.
