Do you assholes really not enjoy looking at astronomical pictures? Not trying to blow anyone's mind here, just sharing photos of something beautiful.

They just don't fit in the dumb picture thread, and some of the images you've posted have been MB's large.

Ok, then let's have a special thread for Jay too. Because you seem to get way more flak than I over the average post.

This is true. They are cool, but I get pissed when it interrupts the reddits

The amount of things that planet has been hit with never ceases to amaze me.

Well, those amaze me less because of where they are.

[c.s.b.]I remember an early school project where we were supposed to design aliens who could live on other planets in the solar system. I was assigned Mercury. I used clay to make a burrowing thing kind of like a trilobyte. Some other kid made a flimsy something for Mars out cardboard tubes, glue and sprinkles. He won the contest because I had "obviously had help from my parents," a recurring theme that contributed to my giving up art.[/c.s.b.]

Mercury's still one of my favorite planets, though (aside from Earth, biased as I am).

I heard a theory that Mercury was at one point much larger, but after being struck by some other large planetary object or asteroid the outer layers of the planet were blown away. Then the remaining cloud of debris rained down, cratering the surface.

an impact like you just said wouldn't physically strip layers from a planet, it would either knock a massive fucking hole out of it or shatter it. the vast majority of the debris would probably just go into space or the sun (mercury doesn't have that much gravity). if this happened while the planet was still forming (ala the moon formation theory) it's feasible.
