Cops (and marine) make a living wage and enough to pay for health insurance for them and their family. A lot of walmart employees don't. They aren't striking because they have to work on thanksgiving. Well at least not from what I've heard. They are striking for better wages - something most cops and firemen (and a lot of airline employees) make as a result of very strong unions.

I agree with marine's statement regarding talking points and the election - but this shouldn't be a new revelation. Since I've followed politics (~15 years) I've never seen an election based on anything but talking points. Aussie probably saw some blurb on reddit about Rubio and decided to come here to talk about it. Just ignore him, he's pretty much all talking points too. I think other than the 'its one of life's greatest mysteries' Rubios answer was sound. And that line may have been a gaffe. Or more likely, he's starting to pander to the religious right. I don't have a problem if it was a mistake, and I think he's being dumb to pander already if that's the case. But I don't think Rubio is as stupid as aussie wants him to be.

But rest assured, if a republican makes an assinine statement and it gets picked up by reddit, aussie will have something to say about it.

actually obamaphones speak to this attitude....(plus not knowing that obama had nothing to do with this phone program, which is an important point also because zomg started by a repub president).

Not sure what you are implying here.  I pay for a piece of my healthcare.  And if you read my previous comments, I don't agree personally with the idea of abortion as birth control.  In case you lack reading comprehension, that means 1) I wouldn't ask my gf to get an abortion and 2) if it were to come down to that, I work and pay into a health insurance plan.

Good try though, keep on shooting! You're bound to hit a target if you spray and pray enough!

Bought into atheist belief system- err, what? Maybe you bought into a belief system, but that's not how I define it. If believing in god is skiing and not believing is not skiing, would you say someone enjoys not-skiing? Belief is for the people who want to believe in something. Don't be stupid jay. 'Everything we are taught is marketing' is one of the dumber things you've said too. I wonder who was marketing math and science concepts to me?

It seems like you're trying to convince yourself of those ideas. Sure as hell aren't convincing me.
Everything is marketing. You are sold a belief system from the time you are born. There's no such thing as a natural law in terms of human interactions, only customs. We're taught not to kill or jaywalk or piss too many people off. Society is constantly trying to sell us on ideas. You're asked to be patriotic, or believe in god, or not to shoplift. If you choose to go against society and what they sell, there are consequences, sometimes. Either way, our beliefs are the consequence of whomever did the best job selling us on them. Everything is about marketing, from the way we're taught in school, to whether or not our parents chose to spank us. In regards to atheism, someone along the way showed us it was ok to not believe, and they presented an argument in favor of disbelief. They won the marketing campaign between theology and disbelief.

On another note, why do you think politicians stopped being great orators full of ideas and dreams? Television made emotion come to the front and pushed away reason. We subconciously care more about how they present themselves and their body language than we care about the message. It's stupid, but my wife voted for Romney because he looked genuine when greeting the Obama family after the debates. Stuff like this changed the marketing tactics.

Wait wtf? "Why do you think politicians stopped being great orators"... when your president is probably the finest political orator in fifty years? I mean, sure, criticise the guy on his substance, but...

I don't really feel how your point addresses acceptance of what are fairly hard scientific facts, mind. I don't expect him to know the 4.5gya figure off the top of his head or even know it at all, but "will never be known" is a little odd. Mind you, he's right in saying that it's not directly relevant to anything that matters.
The paradox is only a conflict between reality and your feeling what reality ought to be.

Being sold beliefs? So you're saying that science isn't necessarily true, it's just sold better? Wtf??

Obama is nothing without his teleprompter.

And I'm not calling facts into dispute. Yes, the Creationist timeline is wildly wrong. I'm not disagreeing. Ignoring facts does make you stupid, yes. Gravity is fact. Evolution is fact. But the reason those systems are in place is not fact, but opinion. Calling people stupid because they have a different interpretation is what I take issue with. That's all I meant to say.

To a certain extent, yes. Do we really have any proof that the planet is millions of years old? No, no humans were around to record events. We take it on faith that the theories we arrived at to explain Earth's origins are true. By the same token, a creationist takes it on faith that a deity formed the Earth, planted dinosaur bones, put oil in the ground etc. I find the former to be infinitely more plausible, but I recognize that to a certain extent I had to take a leap of faith to believe that.

I've seen a Huon Pine in Tasmania when I first move there about 20 years ago that was dated somewhere around 8,000 years old. So amazing standing in the presence of something that predates our entire civilisation as we know it. Also, that's a cool pic.

Cool. You do understand that I'm not a believer, yes? I just don't automatically think Christians are stupid because they believe their god created the world. Doesn't bother me. There's no inquisition anymore, you're free to believe what you want.

well, to be fair, we could have one topic in each section nowadays and still not have one page of new posts . . .
