All I want is a political party with conservative fiscal practices but forward thinking enough to invest in proven workable renewable energy (as has been highly successful in countries like Germany) but with socially liberal (gay marriage, decriminalise drug use). Cut the corporate welfare (mining companies don't need multi billion dollar fuel subsidies when one owner personally earned $18.7 billion last year alone) and social services should be given more funding to help the truly needy, disabled and vulnerable in society. If you choose to not work when you are capable, you shouldn't receive a hand out. Also thorium reactors would be cool. Nuclear is outdated technology and really only still is newly built because you can make weapons from them.

Our taxation system would be better if there wasn't so many loopholes for corporations, and they should tax the churches too. Then we would all pay far less income tax = more money going back into the economy as people tend to spend more when they have more. Any organisation involved in charity work (ie. certain church groups) should get a write off. And religion has no place in government whatsoever.

Bah, it'll never happen.

Because they are non-profits that spend most of what they take in on charity.

Most charity work was historically done by churches here. Around the turn of last century the intellectuals decided it should be secularized but they lacked the income of the tithe system so they turned it into a government function. This then morphed into welfare, section 8 etc. There were checks and balances at the local level which kept fraud miniscule. Not so much today.

Mourlock is a senate candidate, as is Akin. they are not alone in their views on abortion, but that is not the problem. the problem is that they have championed talking points over common sense, and are willing to restrict other peoples freedom.

when did republicans become the anti-freedom party? they bitch about the EPA and restrictions on business, but want to regulate birth control and abortion? please don't give me any lines about today's republicans wanting a smaller government, when they want to be the arbiter of every pregnancy in the country.

nixon enacted the EPA. he may have been a crook, but at least we knew he was for clean air. fuck any politician that wants to do away with the EPA.

i beg to differ. http://www.charities.org/ churches are the biggest 'boots on the ground', the face that an unfortunate sees when receiving charity.
business is the single biggest contributor, and non-profits like the United Way make up a sizeable percentage.

You missed the 'was historically' phrase. Yes, most charities today are supported by corporations. Their donations are tax deductible and the charities themselves are tax exempt.

United Way began as a church organization: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Way_of_America

So did most other charities.

There are a lot of things religion can be criticized for but charity isn't one of them.

Well the so-called obesity epidemic is said to have started in the 90s, I don't think the impact can be seen just yet. Also America invented spray-on cheese, your food is shit.

It is not a stereotype to say that America invented spray-on cheese.

(It might be to suggest Americans are all fatty fat fatties because of it.)

The opposite of this is anti everything that isn't in the bible, but spend spend spend on military despite the current state of the economy.

Kinda like the current GOP.

It annoys me that you either choose between social advancement with over spending, or fiscal conservation with social devolution.

Why can't we have both social advancement and fiscal conservation?

Kinda like the current GOP DNC.
Fixed. Or rather, updated to show how both sides have the baseline fiscal discipline of sailors with unlimited booze and expense accounts.

And the "anti everything that isn't in the Bible" bit is not the majority of the GOP--it's the fringe elements that get press because they say stupid shit. You Euros/Aussies really have a skewed view of the US because the vast majority of what you get about us is what makes the news; and what makes the news is usually pablum nonsense.

They chose her because she was a "young" woman since McCain is an old white man, same reason that Obama chose Biden to balance out the ticket.

No, they chose her because she was female, unknown, figured she had few skeletons in her closet, and had shown a decent amount of skill as a governor. I doubt they realized she was a blooming idiot and would flub her very first television interview. That interview destroyed her, not anything else she did or said.
