Please explain why our system is wrong just because it's different?

Y'all in the rest of the world spend an inordinate amount of time trying to tell Americans that they're wrong because they don't conform to your cultural norms. You make a big deal about imperial standard units vs metric, farenheit vs celcius, driving on a certain side of the road, having enough socialism in our government. Worry about your own shit, like the fact that your military is full of overweight alcoholics, thanks.

You don't see anything wrong with our healthcare system? We pay more per capita than most industrialized countries. Lots of people go bankrupt from hospital bills. Even those with health insurance. Ignoring those problems isn't going to make them go away. Or maybe you just don't see that as a problem. I'm not saying mandated, federally controlled health plans is the solution, but to pretend like the healthcare system as it stands is perfect seems a bit weird.

No, I'm just saying that people should worry about fixing their own countries issues before trying to export their ideas elsewhere. The non-Americans on this forum do it every chance they get.

I never said it was perfect, I just don't believe that having politicians inflict their ideas upon the rest of us is a good alternative to what we have right now. A small percentage of the country goes bankrupt, yes, but it is a very small percentage. Do you replace the entire car if you have one tire that leaks air once in a while?

I don't have a problem with for-profit medicine at all. People spend a lot of time going to medical school, and hospitals invest billions of dollars in equipment. They should be able to charge whatever they can get away with.

whats the evidence that for-profit medical results in advancement in medical techniques? one of the arguments i heard for a NHS (the UK and Cuba were referenced) was that they would research anything that could make people better, regardless if they could make money of it

go!

Because US spends too much on the military and cannot afford it. Also those who stand to lose out (insurance companies) are heavy lobbyists and would cock block such an effort.

Why would you not want free health care? It is covered (barely in the UK) by Tax levies. Everyone that works pays for the NHS because at some point you are going to need it to varying degrees. How much does an average policy cost in the US?The system is not perfect & no free health care ever will be. Is the reason that some don't like the idea is because you feel you are paying for the lazy & feckless?

In the US you have the opportunity to try to straighten out the free health care because you are starting from a blank canvas almost. We have private health insurance here in the UK for those that can afford it because it does speed up the process, the waiting list for a minor op say a tonsillectomy is 6 months on the NHS on private you can get it done in a few weeks. The system works because everyone in the UK has a right to free health care. It is in our countries mind set that everyone pays toward the NHS because you will at some point need it.

yes, it's not free, but using your example of 5k p/a - no-one pays that, unless you go private. i've had rather a few experiences with the nhs, some very very complex - hand surgery - and while it was 'free' it was still on par with anything you could get anywhere in the world. is america so opposed to paying a few dollars a year more to helping people who literally could not afford to survive (and this is not about income p/a, cancer patients face a horrific bill if delivered, and 1 in 3 people will apparently have some form of cancer)?

i honestly do not get it

Before ACA: my mother would have been fucked trying to get health insurance after moving because of pre-existing conditions

After ACA: my mother can sign up for the PCIP, which contrary to thuglican rhetoric is not free health care. she still pays. but it's not as awful as having to pay for everything in full out of your own pocket.

I think I know where I stand on it.

Except you and your family are not even citizens so who cares? You have a Canadian passport. You know where the border is if you like socialized medicine so much.

Why did your mother have a lapse in medical coverage?

She was covered under Maryland's health insurance plan, then she moved to DC into a cheaper house and obviously was no longer covered under MD's health insurance.

She's living on public assistance and she's a foreigner. Do you really expect sympathy?

Did she put any thought into her move? Like "Hey, I have medical coverage provided by this state, and if I leave, I lose it?" There was no affordable housing outside of the square mile that is DC? Please.

>implying paying for health insurance is "living on public assistance" just like collecting TANF and SSDI and WIC etc

And yes I'm assuming she did.
