That makes sense.

I will save my respect for people that try to do good in the world instead of people that try to do as many drugs as possible without dying in their lifetime though, if you don't mind.

I prefer not to be so judgemental of how someone chose to live their life when I never personally knew them, but that's just me...

I don't think you can solely judge whitney houston on drug use.

She did a lot in her life to earn the respect and admiration of the public. Coke addiction doesn't change that.

Nothing that I know of offhand, so why should I respect her? If you study up on people in general, anyone might have done a lot of great things... But the co-workers that burst into tears the news of Whitney's death wasn't crying about great deeds, she was crying about someone society told her she should care about. Having money does not equal being a great person.

This guy has done more to my knowledge to earn respect, but if he had died last week, no one would have batted an eye:

She was probably crying because she's a fan of her music, not because she's "someone society told her she should care about".

IDK that she died, I wasn't a fan. If it were Mike Patton who'd died I'd be devastated.

No, she very much wasn't a fan of her music... But she was a celeb, so she was obviously better than us...

My point was just that being famous shouldn't make you be worshiped. Celeb-mania is insane around here... Everyone hates the paparazzi, but everyone keeps buying the photos...

In my opinion, a normal person response should be more like this:
Ah damn, that person that made that album I liked 20 years ago died... That sucks. They were a great artist. But I haven't even heard their name mentioned in the last 10 years except when in conversations about spouse abuse and/or drug abuse, so they really could have died a long time ago and it wouldn't have changed any aspect of my life. I still have my CD's of their music, so I can still listen to the same 20 year old music tomorrow, just like I could have last month... Tragic that someone died so young. I wish this country would do something about the drug problem. If I am ever a billionaire, I will try to do good things with my money instead of killing myself with ignorance. Oh look, the Kardashians are on the Today show...

I'm not really at odds with you here, I guess what I'm saying is that I understand to a point why people react, whether I agree/like it or not. I was thinking the other day how this is deemed great importance by the media yet the flooding of 400,000 hectares of forest for a hydroelectric system in southern America is meaningless. But the media is mainly controlled by a rich guy who just wants to get richer.

You don't respect the person. You respect the talent.

She was talented and her death was a lose. Chris Hitchens was a talented writer. Kurt Cobain was a talented song writer. David Foster Wallace a talented writer. Jimi Hendrix a talented musician. Van Gogh a talented painter. All people who were responsible for their own deaths in some way. All were loses of talent and creativity that all of us can only hope to ever have. All meant something to others beyond themselves because of their talent.

To say 'I don't care rah rah' is fine and all. I don't care for a lot of famous people who die either. To the immortal universe a bellhop and Kurt Cobain are both equally worthless, sure. But to fall back and say that the bellhop has done more to earn a place of respect and admiration than Houston reeks of resentment. I hate public mourning too and Houston meant nil to me but let's not be ridiculous. Something more than a T.V. person was lost.

Yeah, that is what I mean... Everyone say "that sucks" and move on, and let's concern ourselves with the real issues, not just the famous ones.  I am just PMSing and acted bitchy about it.

After watching the Dark knight 4 or 5 times you realize how over hyped the movie was. Inception was even worse.

Inception? Yeah it's good but all of the reviews and other junk on the internet made me think I was going in to see the Godfather meets the matrix. I was extremely disappointed. Aside from that, it's not an amazing movie in and of itself. It's a cut above your typical action movie but no more.

I didn't read into the hype of either movie before watching them and enjoyed them both. I've found in the past when something is completely hyped up I'm usually disappointed.
