My fiancee has people that work for her out in SF so she travels out there a few times a year. She said the difference in attitude and culture is like night and day. Much more laid back on the west coast, and coming home to the New York office is like walking into a counting house from the movies. Very conservative, and lots of black clothing.

It's just a different work culture man. I'm not saying one is better than the other at all, the east coast (meaning NYC) is just known for being a lot more rigidly conservative. I bet I have a shitload more black in my wardrobe than you do

I'd love to work in a more laid back environment, I don't think 'being professional' adds anything to the effort put in. Blame all the uptight bankers here.

i've seen a director query why the top button of a colleagues shirt was undone whilst on client site

It makes sense if you are seeing clients everyday. If I have meetings or people from the parent company or even sometimes executives are in town, I wear a suit. There's no point to me wearing one everyday though.
