This plastic straw obsession is the biggest distraction, about the most trivial problem we have.
But people can feel good about driving to McDonalds in their SUV to buy farmed beef because they don't take the straw.

It was odd that the straws were a thing that government actually acted upon. Because Americans are fucking idiots when it comes to animals, I don't doubt that the turtle thing played a big role in people lobbying for it.

Why do you want to hurt turtles?

Cheap and non-flammable, SF6 is a colourless, odourless, synthetic gas. It makes a hugely effective insulating material for medium and high-voltage electrical installations.

It is widely used across the industry, from large power stations to wind turbines to electrical sub-stations in towns and cities. It prevents electrical accidents and fires.

However, the significant downside to using the gas is that it has the highest global warming potential of any known substance. It is 23,500 times more warming than carbon dioxide (CO2).

Just one kilogram of SF6 warms the Earth to the same extent as 24 people flying London to New York return.

It also persists in the atmosphere for a long time, warming the Earth for at least 1,000 years.

But yeah lets worry about straws.

A bigger issue is the release of CFC's and HCFC's. Every refrigeration and air conditioning system in the world eventually leaks and dumps the refrigerant into the atmosphere. They're considered super greenhouse gases, and are now banned, but the damage has largely been done.

All those millions of people living in cities that could not exist without air conditioning, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Adelaide, etc are destroying the environment.

Maybe people will have to vacate unsustainable cities.
I could live in Adelaide without AC if I had to - not the car maybe, evaporative cooling works well enough here and there are other systems besides refrigerants.
With a little bit of gumption the whole city could be cooled by the sea.

As I understand it CFcs do break down eventually and the modern refrigerants are much less damaging, pure ammonia systems are fairly harmless.

Not that anyone in China, India or the rest of Asia gives a shit, they still use the old stuff.

According to my Vietnamese colleague everyone in Vietnam is installing AC like crazy.

Besides AC people across the world do have refrigerators, and they tend not to last as long and get disposed of without going through recycling.

Parent teacher night a few days ago. I felt like a NPC waiting for someone to come initiate a quest.

You should have hung a glowing question mark over your head.

I don't think that is a good idea. A random passerby might try to kill me for extra experience points and good karma. I might even be an achievement.

You're at a school, they might do that anyway.
