Senior Al Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki and another America-born militant were killed in Yemen early Friday morning by a CIA-led U.S. drone strike, marking the highest-profile takedown of terror leaders since the raid on Usama bin Laden's compound.

Fox News has learned that two Predator drones hovering above al-Awlaki's convoy fired the Hellfire missiles which killed the terror leader. According to a senior U.S. official, the operation was carried out by Joint Special Operations Command, under the direction of the CIA. A total of four people were killed in the attack.
...
Al-Awlaki was a U.S.-born Islamic militant cleric who became a prominent figure with Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the network's most active branch. He was involved in several terror plots in the United States in recent years, using his fluent English and Internet savvy to draw recruits to carry out attacks. President Obama signed an order in early 2010 making him the first American to be placed on the "kill or capture" list.

Something about this rubs me the wrong way. His views may have been 180° from my own, and he may have been a terrorist hell bent on destroying the country and all but I still don't think he should have been killed in such a way. I don't feel bad for him but the whole 'U.S. citizen by birth killed by the CIA on a presidential death warrant' thing just doesn't feel right.

I am not hearing much from the usual antiwar crowd about this. I can only imagine the moaning if this had happened under Bush in '07..

So its OK to summarily execute non-Americans without trial, independent review of evidence, never mind collateral damage and so on?

He was an American, your President had him executed, its up to you guys to figure it out.

think this bloke kinda forfeited his "equality" a while back tbh. crying injustice in THIS particular case is pretty stupid.

American citizen or not, he forfeited his Americaness when he fought for the enemy. Americans that fought for Germany in the world wars shouldn't have been plucked from the battlefield before the bullets flew They just picked the wrong side to be on. His citizenship, like theirs, means absolutely nothing.

If its not in a battle, which it wasn't, and he's merely a suspect then yes - its an execution.

Fighting terrorists is not as simple as "this side of front line = good, that side of front line = bad".

Shouldn't the govt have to prove that at some point? Or they can just state that about whoever they want to kill.

So it's not proven that he was a member of Al-Qaeda? News to me.

The killings of U.S.-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki and another American Al Qaeda propagandist in a U.S. airstrike Friday wipe out the decisive factor that made the terrorist group's Yemen branch the most dangerous threat to the United States: its reach into the West.

Issuing English-language sermons on jihad on the Internet from his hideouts in Yemen's mountains, al-Awlaki drew Muslim recruits like the young Nigerian who tried to bring down a U.S. jet on Christmas and the Pakistani-American behind the botched car bombing in New York City's Times Square.

How has it been 'proven'?

Whoever he is, its not right that a govt can execute someone and then issue a press release and some juicy intel 'proving' it.
Think how dangerous that is - or maybe you trust your govt.

Yes and Saddam was stockpiling nuclear weapons which could hit Britain in 45 minutes, Colin Powell told the UN so it must be true.

I'm sure this guy was in AQ, but I don't trust the govt enough to let them kill people on a nod and a wink.
Just look at the number of Guantanamo detainees who turned out to have no evidence of anything against them.

Yes, because they are not Americans. The only people the state is responsibile to is it's citizens. I am far from a pacifist, mind you.

What makes you think it wasn't in battle? Yemen, with US support, has been battling AQ for years.

Also it is treason. In Australia you can lose your citizenship if you took up arms against the country.

War isn't a sport.  You attack the enemy when they don't even realize you are there at every opportunity possible.

We're not doing anything. In fact, we encouraged him to step down. Those who are getting killed at this point aren't exactly "civvies". It's a civil war.

That was long before this turned into a civil war. Yemen is an ally. Saleh himself is not.
