Really? Hmm, the police said he was carrying an "automatic rifle" and a pistol.

Anyways, there is genuinely no one I have more sympathy for than his mother. Imagine having your son go out and do that. Apparently she had no idea; they lived a quiet, peaceful life in the better parts of Oslo, he was quiet and modest, and his mother was always proud of him. He came home every sunday for dinner, and spent the rest of the week 'working' on his farm (read: planning).

I can't imagine the hell she's going through right now.
I believe I read somewhere he used 600lbs of fertilizer, and since he " worked " on a farm he had access to it and didn't look suspicious that he had that much

I tend to have enough faith in this country to think that she won't need it, but yeah, she might.. I don't know, we don't really have automatic systems for that here, I think.

I hope she doesn't need one.

which if true, and given he had a business in agriculture and was 'angry' for some time, is easily enough material to build a bomb like what was exploded in oslo.

What do you mean?

The people on the island were kids with a handful of adults, it was a youth labour party summer camp, why would there be armed supervisors there?

It is NOT a gun law issue...

he bought 6 metric tons of fertilizer in may or april..... 3 tons have been found at the farm.... it's estimated he may have used up to 600 kilos for the bomb.

He had 6 tons, yeah.

Experts say bomb was 'at least' 500kg

I mean the possible presence of a weapon is enough to deter 95% of attackers.
It would also have helped if it didn't take the SWAT 45 minutes to respond.

Read the thread this has all been discussed previously, it's a tiny island an hour away from where a huge bomb exploded two hours previously.

The response time is going to be slow especially when most if not all available resources are focused on the bomb situation.

It's actually quite annoying the ammount of preasure foreign media has put on this 'slow response time'.

the only recent terrorism incident on this scale i can think off where the security forces worked quickly and well would be the madrid bombing.

I'm sure I heard reports they were looking for two additional bombs too, they aren't going to immediately drop what they're doing to go neutralise an unconfirmed threat an hour away are they.

I don't see why ....... the island 1 hour away from a situation that happen 2 hours from the time the shooting began .... no-one would have known that was going to happen

the island is not in immediate area of explosion - the lapse time and distance wouldn't have alerted anyone to have highen level of security for a youth camp

I agree with SERE.

But why shouldn't it be a gun law issue? If its not a gun law issue then what is it?

it's a 'a seriously unstable man went postal and killed nearly 100 people, mostly young teenagers with no prior warning' issue. this shit isn't something you can realistically defend against without some kind of thought police. It's encouraging to see the PM and royalty say they don't want to get tied down with fear like the USA post 9-11, they want to focus their efforts on moving forward.

Keep the mentally ill away from things that go boom or bang...

Sane people don't wipe out 100 innocent civilians, just because they forgot their meds that morning, and the talking Jesus image in their toast told them to 'go forth and cleanse the ills of the world'
