The DFAC over on Camp Victory was pimp. All the coalition brass ate there so they had shit like deviled eggs and lobster and steak. All we got at ours was fried chicken, pizza, and corn dogs.

You ever eat those nasty ass breakfast MRE's? They 'found' some for us when we were on an exercise in Egypt and some nasty girl unit stole our plane home.

I was completely against the invasion, but once the cat is out of the bag, you have to do the job right or you risk causing an even bigger mess. The people who want all the troops home now, today, this minute, are unrealistic and terrifyingly naive.

Nah. General estimates are that it takes about a generation.

How long has the Balkans been going?
Africa is still feeling the echoes of colonialism, Iraq and Afghanistan will be going for a good while yet.

It takes focused investment and attention from developed nations to nurture the free markets and democratic reforms. That shit doesn't just sprout where it's planted. The Balkans are actually doing pretty well. Africa is a victim of "sprinkle some democracy over there" approaches to foreign assistance.

Not sure how a government freely elected by the population of a country is a "puppet"...

Think it's gonna take a little longer than 1 generation tbh. Splitting up the country might've been a faster solution, the 'democracy' as it is now feels pointless if the most important factor for a leading figure in people's minds is heritage.

So long as the government is representative and provides a voice for all factions, democracy will work. The economy must also flourish, so that the government can provide necessary services for the people, as well. The two go hand in hand.

Let's just hope so. I always figured that the most important prerequisite to a functional democracy was an educated populace. In Iraq that is less of an issue than in Afghanistan... that's a country full of goat herders. If the people aren't critical of their government corruption will spread easily, just look at Karzai.

In Iraq's case I can see it going in the direction of Belgium if one population gets fed up having to work with the other.

An educated, prosperous middle class is also very important to a successful democracy...but you must have the economy to support that.

Hence wouldn't it have been a better idea to take control of the country first so as to get that economy going and hand control over to the Iraqis once their country is stable? We've already got problems with too many idiots being in parliament here, I can't imagine what it's like there.

Uneducated != unintelligent. People got along just fine prior to 100% literacy.

Whilst true, you need educated people to be your doctors, engineers, lawyers etc. which are kind of important in an indirect way.
