http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011 … 252830.htmA tsunami warning has been issued for Alaska after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit in the Pacific Ocean, 172 kilometres east of Atka in Alaska, at a depth of about 62km, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The quake on the Fox Islands - 163 kilometres east of the tiny fishing port of Atka - stuck at 6:09pm local time.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Centre says a tsunami warning is now in effect for the coastal areas of Alaska.
It said in a statement the tsunami warning meant all coastal residents in the warning area who are near the beach or in low-lying regions should move immediately to higher ground and away from harbours and inlets, including those sheltered directly from the sea.
"Earthquakes of this size magnitude are known to generate tsunamis," the centre said.
"If a tsunami has been generated, the waves will first reach Adak, Alaska, at 8:12pm (3:12pm AEST)."
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) says there is no tsunami threat for Australia at this stage.
