Getting a new pc for BF3 coming out, but it's my birthday a week Sunday, and I'm getting a bit of money.

Wanting to get a new screen, as I'm using a stinking 17" Dell.

Looking for 24", maybe 26" if I can stretch to it.

What would you recommend?

hmm, that's a good point, didn't think of that.

Is there that much a of a jump in GPU power needed between 1680x1050 and 19020x1080/1200?

My 5850 has been going for a year and a half with a dual monitor set up. Plays pretty much every game on max at 1920x1200. Usually no AA but with a monitor that big you dont really notice it except for in screenshots. If you wanna max out games consistenly at that res its maybe a 250$ graphics card every 2 years or so

I regret not getting a 1920x1200 monitor, 1680 is just too small.

Afaik the cards are pretty similar so you can pretty much expect to play any games with decent fps at that res

Good luck finding a 16:10, 16:9 seems to be the norm now...

I have a 16:9 24" and prefer it, simply because it compensates for the small viewing angle in newer FPS games.

i guess it's whether or not you'd need it... i never feel as though my 22" is to small, tbh. for office/work applications it can have 2x A4 windows side-by-side and for all normal applications it's fine. for gaming... i prefer to have a slightly smaller resolution with top-end AA than a bigger resolution that looks jaggy, or is mid-texture. i don't exactly feel gimped by 1650x1080... plenty big enough for gaming.

I have a 22" 1920x1080 with the same card you have, Camm. Runs everything beautifully at native resolution and max settings across the board.

Edit: It's an LG monitor. Samsung or LG - buy Korean and you can't go wrong.

If I was buying today, I'd give this a shot:

ViewSonic VX2753mh-LED Black 27" 1ms Full HD HDMI LED BackLight LCD Monitor w/Speakers 300 cd/m2 DC 30,000,000:1, (1,200:1) for $350. Already have a 1920x1200 screen, so this one would give me a native 16:9 option. The two HDMI inputs are pretty sweet as well, in case you want to plug both your computer and your current-gen consoles in without swapping wires or routing your computer through an AV receiver.

More 16:9 options -

For $260: ASUS VE258Q Black 25" 2ms HDMI LED Backlight Widescreen LCD Monitor w/Display Port & Speakers 250 cd/m2 50,000,000:1 ASCR

For $160: Asus ML228H 21.5" 1920X1080 2ms Full HD LED BackLight LED Monitor Slim Design 250 cd/m2 10,000,000 :1 (ASCR)

1920x1200 screens seem to be slightly harder to find these days, and are primarily useful if you want slightly more stuff on one screen or do video editing on 1080 projects. Asus, Samsung and Viewsonic have treat me well as far as LCD monitors are concerned.

Not completely necessary. The nice thing about my 26" is that I can sit back from it several feet and still be able to read small font at 1920x1200. I just drop the resolution to 1440x900 for games if they're struggling.
