A Nepalese soldier in the British army has been given a top bravery award by Queen Elizabeth II for his heroics in Afghanistan, where he single-handedly saw off more than 30 Taliban fighters.

Corporal Dipprasad Pun, 31, said he thought he was going to die and so had nothing to lose in taking on the attackers who overran his checkpoint.
...
Pun fired more than 400 rounds, launched 17 grenades and detonated a mine to repel the Taliban assault on his checkpoint near Babaji in Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan, last September.

Surrounded, the enemy opened fired from all sides and for 15 minutes Pun remained under continuous attack, including from rocket-propelled grenades and AK47 guns.

At one point, unable to shoot, he used his machine gun tripod to knock down a militant who was climbing the walls of the compound.

Two insurgents were still attacking by the time he ran out of ammunition, but he set off a Claymore mine to repel them.
...
He was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross (CGC), which is given in recognition of acts of conspicuous gallantry during active operations against the enemy.  The CGC is second only to the Victoria Cross -- the highest honour for bravery in the face of the enemy.
Damn good work, sounds like something out of a movie.

Would've thought fighting 30 dudes off at once would at least qualify for the VC.

Badass nonetheless.

There's only been like 1 given out since WWII or something.
Anyone read 'Barefoot Soldier'? It's written by the guy that got the VC, Johnson Beharry.

I remember something like that.

For some reason they don't like giving them it, or can't.

Load of bullshit tbh, this guy should've gotten the VC.

the gurkha's are the fucking shit.

here's another gurkha-versus-a-million story:

http://www.badassoftheweek.com/shrestha.html

Bishnu Shrestha wasn't looking for a fight on the evening of 2 September 2010. As his express train roared through the darkness of the jungles of West Bengal, this Nepalese ex-soldier sat quietly, looking out the window into the calm stillness of the night sky above. The 35 year old veteran was finally on his way back home, having just retired from his position as a Naik (Corporal) in the 7th Battalion of the 8th Gurkha Infantry – a famous, battle-hardened regiment of ass-whompers that had produced balls-out awesome war heroes like Lachhiman Gurung, and a unit in which Shrestha's own father had served during Vietnam. One in a long line of warriors, Bishnu himself had seen plenty of combat in Iraq, Afghanistan, and probably a half-dozen other locations that may never be declassified, and now, after having spent a good part of his adult life crushing his foes with the stock of his assault rifle and charging enemy positions armed with a bayonet and his ultra-badass kukri knife, he was looking forward to finally seeing an end to the constant fighting, settling down, and building a family in the quiet mountains of his homeland. On this evening he rode the Maurya Express, a passenger train appropriately sharing it's name with historical badass Chandragupta Maurya, enjoying the serenity of the Indian night.

But there would be no rest for the weary. Around midnight, the mighty locomotive ground to a halt unexpectedly, sending passengers lurching forward in their seats. Without warning, while everyone was still trying to figure out what the crap hell was going on, suddenly from seemingly every direction passengers stood up and began to whip out all manner of frighteningly gruesome-looking weaponry – guns, knives, clubs and fucking giant swords(seriously, who robs a train with a sword!) – and started shouting for everyone to sit still, get out their valuables, and prepare to get ripped the fuck off.

6 have been awarded in the last 10 years.  out of about 2 million soldiers who have served in a combat zone.

still more than the amount of VCs that have been awarded in the last 10 years... 2.

although the ratio may be different.

compare combat records too... idk, you might find interesting results

55 500 troops deployed in iraq and afghanistan from my research

no comparison of ratio then.

i dont think you can compare combat records.  especially for iraq.  the highest level of Uk troops in country were a tiny fraction of American troops deployed.  And, the areas where the Brits were deployed were not as dangerous.  Outside of the sunni triangle.

that's what I meant by combat records, compare the amount of british troops who have have been shot at and those who have not with American troops.

then again the regular rocket/mortar attacks make that distinction hard to make, sometimes
