Giant bowl of seaweed salad and some salmon sushi today. I normally like squid and such, but the mini-octopus salad I could have chosen instead kept staring at me through rubbery eyes.

You need to try those baby octopus, live.  Suckers pulling at you down your throat.  Or still breathing fish, as you eat the sides.

Muscle memory actually.  Fresh picked, gutted, and chopped before put on a plate.  They are already dead by then.  Just muscle memory.  Same as cutting a chicken's head off.  Body will sometimes continue to flap about.

Because throwing a bucket of crabs or crawfish into boiling water is less traumatic to the animal.

I'd rather be flash-boiled than pulled apart slowly limb from limb, if it came to that.

They were already dead when they were gutted.

Never chucked a live oyster and put it on the grill?

Yeah, i read.

Not a whole lot you can do with a clam to avoid that other than freeze it. That said, I prefer clam chowder.

It's general practice these days to freeze them for half an hour or so before hand to "put them to sleep" first.

Whenever we get live crawfish (Asian markets), we pick out a few and have the kids play with them.  The rest, my wife throws them into a huge steamer without a second thought.  She loves them.

Because it's a new experience and we should all be trying out new things as often as we can.

Why do people destroy food and make it an unpleasurable experience to eat it? Why steam all your veggies, grill all your meats, and avoid butter and salt?

this is what Illcano is trying to explain.  He's not actually eating a live animal...something about atp receptors activated by the salt

maximizes nutrients, original taste, colour, little work, little cleanup, etc
bbq taste, usually healthier than cooking in oils, simple, sometimes a social event
no need, cant remember the last time i used butter
no need, our food is over salted as it is

I took a girl from Arkansas to have sushi when she was visiting here. She spit it out.

Arkansas/sushi = bait, not food.
