watch that space, imo. there has always a lot of bitterness and antipathy between the two, but especially after mumbai.

now a lot of indians are becoming increasingly vocal about saying "well, shit, america just showed how it's done - why don't we pull something like that?" and that could get very nasty indeed. remember, pakistan doesn't have a real government, it's basically run by the military, and they still mostly fear india far more than terrorists.

Was there supposed to be more to this post? Seems more like a random thought than an OP.

Anyway, I don't think much will happen between those two besides bitching at each other. They are both nuclear and I don't think the leadership of India wants to throw away all of their economic progress just to shit over Pakistan and I doubt the leadership of Pakistan is suicidal. I could be wrong and am just looking at things through a rational western lenses that doesn't see the whole cultural picture.

Re: that whole region- I remember reading a story a few months back about how all of SE asia was seriously upping their military spending in response to China getting stronger. And with the current Thai-Cambodia fighting it looks like that area may be a problem for the rising China and India. The world's next powder keg maybe.

I think Pakistan is more likely to do something to India than the other way around, for the reasons Macbeth cited. India doesn't want to endanger their rising power status. Pakistan has nothing to lose, and much to gain, from a nationalistic perspective. War with their archenemy would (at least temporarily) bind societal fractures as most/all would come together against a common foe. It would take the people's collective mind off the ineptitude of their government (for a time).

But I don't think it's likely.

They would get crushed if they attempted an invasion, or another act of war. Against India.

Considering there are alleged links between the Mumbai attack and the Pakistani ISI, I'm not surprised that there's a lot of bitterness lingering over that.
