If the PSN doesn't go up tonight I'll watch this otherwise it's getting DVR'd for sunday. Anyone have plans to watch this one?

The only possible candidate the GOP has that I like or has a good shot at Obama is Mitch Daniels.

Are debates even worth watching these days? I mean, obviously they affect the general voting public's thoughts, but it's largely superficial influence. A lot of people talk shit on Obama for being well composed and a good speaker if it's rehearsed, but what exactly are you seeing when you watch someone debate that's any different?

We're going to win this on the economy. So we need someone who can articulate that well and bring in the social conservative vote. Otherwise they vote 3rd party and the Democrat wins. Every Republican president in my lifetime has been a social conservative.

Which is why theyve been destroyed outside of the midwest. Bush lost the popular vote. mccain didnt lose because he wasnt conservative enough. He lost because palin represented nothing but rednecks. Put up another social conservatard and watch what happens.

He is against the use of prisons for enemy combatants, humanitarian and foreign aid, the reorganization and consolidation of our homeland security, traditional marriage, the AZ illegal immigration act, wants to get rid of the federal reserve, intonated a return to the gold standard and at one point stated he was for legalizing drugs such as heroin and cocaine – I’m not kidding.

The debate moderators at one point had to ask Paul and Johnson how they expected to win the Republican nomination with anti-Republican viewpoints such as these.

Politically though, no modern presidential candidate has won the Republican nomination being fiscally imprudent, negligent on social issues, and anti-defense. Look at the most recent Republican presidential nominees and how they were able to appeal politically to the three main constituencies.

While prickly with the conservative base, John McCain knew he had to win over enough people from each of the three main groups to win the Republican nomination. His position of strength was national security having served in the US Navy and was the leading proponent in congress for the Iraqi surge. He was consistently pro-life and appealed to economic voters using the line that government spending like drunken sailors was an insult to drunken sailors.

George W. Bush unabashedly was a social conservative referring to his reaffirmation of Jesus Christ in his adult life during the 2000 campaign. He appealed to fiscal conservatives touting his plans for tax cuts and appealed to defense conservatives supporting a missile defense shield and a non-nation building approach to foreign policy.

Unfortunately Americans put a lot of weight in the quick snarky answers that spark an emotion. The deep, thoughtful, and comprehensive remarks get very little response or coverage. I believe the reason for this is because we have become lazy intellectually. It's pretty sad, since a complex problem needs a complex answer.

That's the media shaping the news to invoke a response. If someone says something that goes against the grain over and over then it's not news or apparently shocking. Combine that with a cloaked editorial that offers sound bites of abbreviated comments that are out of context and you've got an audience eagerly waiting to be manipulated.
