our liberal party is the same as the conservative party in the uk. pretty lulz
i don't care about the nationality. i find it funny when you quote people that actually embody principles or politics that are antithetical to your own. that's because you get a fucking hard-on for quotations.com, and think it makes you seem sage and wizened in a debate. quoting some pithy sentence or apothegm by a long-dead dude does not lend your argument weight. especially when the people you blithely copy+paste are people that are diametrically opposed to you on the political spectrum (i believe the original example was dr. johnson, or something). so yes. don't care if they are british. i care when you meaninglessly quote someone as if quotation itself is a method of debate. you get starry-eyed with these things.Jay wrote:

and yes, cite churchill. in another thread you just vituperatively accused me of being a tory, born with a spoon in his mouth, that is part of the worst sort of patrician elite that think they have a birth-right to run the country. now quote churchill. fucking lmao. unbelievable.

I can't find any definitive research for you, no. I found one article that said that people tended to become more liberal as they aged, but that it had more to do with race relations than anything else, so that's kind of a wash.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

Look at it this way though, todays retirees voted for FDR and Truman and JFK and LBJ and Carter and yet they turned out in massive numbers for Bush.

the only correlation that can be mapped is that people become more liberal as they become more educated. the liberals generally tend to be the city-dwelling cultured workers and intelligentsia. education opens people minds and political dogma becomes difficult to maintain.
I don't think he enjoys it nearly as much when you misquote them, though.Jay wrote:

THE GIST
- Contrary to popular belief, people generally do not become more conservative as they age.
- Seniors often describe themselves as being more tolerant and more open to new ideas in their old age.
- What's happening in society when people come of age often greatly influences the set point for their core beliefs.
Amidst the bipartisan banter of election season, there persists an enduring belief that people get more conservative as they age -- making older people more likely to vote for Republican candidates.
Ongoing research, however, fails to back up the stereotype. While there is some evidence that today's seniors may be more conservative than today's youth, that's not because older folks are more conservative than they use to be. Instead, our modern elders likely came of age at a time when the political situation favored more conservative views.
In fact, studies show that people may actually get more liberal over time when it comes to certain kinds of beliefs. That suggests that we are not pre-determined to get stodgy, set in our ways or otherwise more inflexible in our retirement years.
Contrary to popular belief, old age can be an open-minded and enlightening time.

You do understand there is a vast gulf between people who are intellectually liberal and people who are american liberals, yes? They are not synonymous.
"Ah, you miserable creatures! You who think that you are so great! You who judge humanity to be so small! You who wish to reform everything! Why don't you reform yourselves? That task would be sufficient enough."

Liberal as defined historically has meant openness to change and tolerance, how does that jibe with a political party that shreds civil liberties and business rights? Ok, they're more tolerant of gays and abortion. Piddling little issues in the grand scheme of things. The only real liberals in this country are libertarians.

I don't understand what the first result on Google has to do with the fact that you said people tend to become more conservative as they age as a rule. If you want to provide articles with a counter-argument to what I posted, be my guest. Also, liberalism and libertarianism aren't the same thing.

You can make nuanced criticism of past political figures and still recognize the value and significance of their accomplishments. I said it just 2 pages ago, the fact the founding fathers were also slave owners is one of most fascinating paradoxes of American history. Nowhere did I say the founding fathers were all baby eating savages. The constitution is not meaningless, but it is for these reasons that it should be taken with a grain of salt. That is all we are saying.
I'm not sure I agree with this analysis. For a couple of reasons. Young people are not historically a super powerful demographic when it comes to elections. FDR was elected in 1932. At the very youngest, you'd have to have been born in 1911 in order to have voted. You'd be over 100 years old today. So unless people in their 20's were somehow singlehandedly deciding elections in the 1930's, and they on average lived to be more than 90* years old, your argument falls apart.Jay wrote:

I mean, I see where you're going with this to a certain extent, but unless you've personally researched the election data it's kind of pointless to ascribe entire demographics to one candidate or the other. They elected Carter, but someone else chose Reagan? Show us. Greatest Generation =/= baby boomers, which I think is the group you're looking for here.

It's not universal, obviously, but people do tend to become more conservative as they age. They find god or have kids or just get sick of politics in general and tune out. That's a pretty authoritative statement considering I vote for more Democrats than I ever did when I was first voting. Also my grandparents were once staunch Republicans but then turned Democrat after their retirement.
Fuck Israel
interesting angle on the spanish train crash, in which the driver has just behind closed-doors given a 'confession' that he was personally reckless, is that in the background to all of this several major european rail companies were all bargaining for a contract to build brazil's olympic rail-links. contract was worth £13 billion. one of the contactual stipulations made to the companies bargaining for it is that they 'cannot have had an emergency incident or crash on the same rail network in 5 years'. the spanish train network is state-owned and state-run; it's called renfe. this guy just cost the spanish government - during one of spain's worst ever recessions - £13 billion.

outrage on the right after Obama said Ho Chi Minh was inspired by Thomas Jefferson while he was meeting with our ally the Vietnamese.
"At the conclusion of the meeting, President Sang shared with me a copy of a letter sent by Ho Chi Minh to Harry Truman. And we discussed the fact that Ho Chi Minh was actually inspired by the US Declaration of Independence and Constitution, and the words of Thomas Jefferson. Ho Chi Minh talks about his interest in cooperation with the United States. And President Sang indicated that even if it's 67 years later, it's good that we're still making progress."

That's why I want to be rich. Not so I can have a bunch of useless shit, but rather so I can finally wall myself off from the world at large and generally stop giving a shit about humanity in it's entirety.

For example, you could start by cutting your internet connection and stop visiting BF2s forums.
What a wonderful sentiment. I too, wish you were walled off from the rest of humanity.Extra Medium wrote:
