sounds like quite a well-researched, equanimous read. might check it out. one of the better articles i've read on the guardian recently.

Dads from the Youngstown metro area. Went there last year. Imagine a thriving 1950's mid size city and then turn it into a ghost town..... its creepy. Like something out of Fallout 3, if you want to exaggerate a little. All of Ohios roads and highways are a light brown/yellow vomit color, most of them look at least 30+ years old.

An Israeli Jew has been shot dead near Jerusalem's Western Wall after a guard mistook him for a Palestinian militant, police say.

Gunfire was heard on Friday morning at the wall - one of Judaism's holiest sites where hundreds of worshippers were attending prayers at the time.

Police say the guard shot the man after hearing him shout "Allahu Akbar".

The area, which is patrolled by armed guards, closed to visitors for about an hour but has now reopened.

The incident took place at about 07:40 local time (04:40 GMT) as the man emerged from a public toilet at the wall compound.

A police spokesman said the guard drew his weapon and fired a number of shots at the man after hearing him shout "Allahu Akbar" (God is great, in Arabic).

The man had his hands in his pockets at the time he was approached by the guard, the spokesman, Micky Rosenfeld, said.

The Western Wall is part of the retaining wall of the Temple Mount (known to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif), dating back to a time when a Jewish temple stood on the Mount.

Jews go to the Western Wall to pray and leave prayers on pieces of paper between its ancient stones.

The site and the area around it has in the past been a flashpoint for violence between Israelis and Palestinians.

i think europeans feel a pride, en bloc, about their cultural and historical heritage. especially when compared to other areas. europe is the most civilized continent of them all, innit. we got the most shit done. we've originated most of the Big Great Ideas. we are responsible for the most sophisticated and formal high-culture. it's been the birthplace of a lot of cool things (and an equal amount of disgusting and horrifying things too, as a result). classical civilisation. democracy. the christian church. the renaissance. the enlightenment, ffs. the post-enlightenment. the holocaust. europe is a place of epic ambition.

sure we fight a lot. but there's a lot of plurality that is mutually entertained today. i'd rather be european than from any other continent.
