A court in the southern city of Toulon sentenced a local man to a year in prison this week, with nine months suspended, after he racially abused a white man and later attacked him.

The assailant, aged in his thirties and of north African origins, was found to have shouted "You dirty white, I'm going to smash you. This is a place for Arabs," at the victim, who was in a carpark with five friends, both male and female, on the night of May 10th.

The attacker, accompanied by his own entourage and already drunk, according to TF1 television, then punched and head-butted two of the group, who were all aged in their twenties.

Police were called to the scene and arrested the assailant.

A court in Toulon on Monday convicted the thirty-something of collective assault and public injury, the latter relating to his racist abuse.

He was sentenced to a year in prison, but will only serve three months, after the court put him on probation for nine months.

This is only the latest incident of 'anti-white racism' to hit France.

In April, The Local reported that a trial had begun over the racially-motivated beating of a white Frenchman. The attackers allegedly shouted “dirty white" and "dirty French" before assaulting the victim.

A fact that risked clouding the issue for some is that the man accused of carrying out the attack is white himself, according to French daily Le Parisien.

Significantly, the prosecution’s stance was supported by the International League against Racism and anti-Semitism (LICRA).

"We are acting just like we would for any kind of racism case, whether it's anti-Semitic or anti-black," Vice president of LICRA Philippe Schmidt told The Local at the time. "We cannot just pull a blanket over our eyes because this is a case of anti-white racism."

"It's obvious that incidents of anti-white or anti-French racism are less common, but that does not mean we have to ignore them," he added.

The issue of anti-white racism is a sensitive subject in France. Up until recently it was a concept invoked mainly by members of France's far-right organizations.

However, leader of the opposition UMP party, Jean-François Copé, provoked uproar last October when he claimed “anti-white sentiment is thriving in some French neighbourhoods."

"Some people, of whom many are French nationals, despise other French people because they don't follow the same religion," Copé added.

my problem was with explicit and gratuitous violence to no purpose. violence porn. fetishized gore. where people just wanted to see amusing pictures. i would've thought it was fairly clear. evidently not, as it needs to be explained to you.
"Waah MMA and purse-snatchers getting hit non-fatally. Oh here's a pic of a lady jumping in front of a horse out of fucking nowhere. She dies later. Go, my uni!" Of course it made me curious.

would you say it's gratuitous? a) it has a social and historical importance. b) it's grainy footage where you can't even see anything that would make you recoil. it's like 15fps. it's almost a slapstick effect. i know you're just being difficult because you're a special little flower. it's okay. tf2 is wonky.

If everyone here edited their MMA pics and gifs of purse-snatchers getting bonked to all look grainy and old, would you be fine?

i don't have a problem with MMA. there's a sports sub-forum if people want to see mashed faces and enjoy it.

wasn't a "purse snatcher" that was offending, either. was the fact it was a gif of someone being ran over graphicly in an 'amusing' thread. to no point.

but yeah sure if you want to occlude the bare violence on show, be my guest.

you special little flower you.

OK, off to see about getting nipples allowed within site rules, provided the pics and/or videos look grainy and old.

Are we talking about pogroms of jews or by jews?

Because they slaughtered their way across the ME the first time they invaded Palestine, if the OT is anything to go by.

Gregory Currie, a professor of philosophy at the University of Nottingham, recently argued in the New York Times that we ought not to claim that literature improves us as people, because there is no “compelling evidence that suggests that people are morally or socially better for reading Tolstoy” or other great books.

Actually, there is such evidence. Raymond Mar, a psychologist at York University in Canada, and Keith Oatley, a professor emeritus of cognitive psychology at the University of Toronto, reported in studies published in 2006 and 2009 that individuals who often read fiction appear to be better able to understand other people, empathize with them and view the world from their perspective. This link persisted even after the researchers factored in the possibility that more empathetic individuals might choose to read more novels. A 2010 study by Mar found a similar result in young children: the more stories they had read to them, the keener their “theory of mind,” or mental model of other people’s intentions.

“Deep reading” — as opposed to the often superficial reading we do on the Web — is an endangered practice, one we ought to take steps to preserve as we would a historic building or a significant work of art. Its disappearance would imperil the intellectual and emotional development of generations growing up online, as well as the perpetuation of a critical part of our culture: the novels, poems and other kinds of literature that can be appreciated only by readers whose brains, quite literally, have been trained to apprehend them.

Ehrm, jews have been persecuted for at least 2000 years.
Then it continued all through the Middle Ages and wasn't changed at all by the Age of Enlightenment.
Then continued with the rise of Nationalism in 19th century, followed by Antisemitism and the Nazis in the 20th.

Still, this "eye for an eye" bodycount nit-picking leads nowhere.

What does any of this have to do with Lady Gaga?

So reading books is useful, doesn't mean you should spend your whole life doing nothing but now does it?

i'm sure the venn diagram of 'lady gaga fans' and 'tolstoy readers' is extremely interesting.

and no one is saying you should spend your whole life reading books. who does that? who can afford to do that? the article's sub-text was clearly the line about modern technology/lifestyle causing a waning of effort/attention spans, so we're losing the ability to read complex works for sustained periods of time. it's a major part of our development of culture and our personal empathic ability. nobody is saying you should retire to a cave and only read great novels. just that it is an aspect of middle-class 'leisure' that is disappearing, in lieu of twitter-feeds and instagram food photos.

Well thats funny, the article and the linked abstracts don't actually put forward anything specific about Tolstoy, just fiction in general, and childrens stories.

the article talks about "deep reading" and "literature", and it cites frank kermode (one of those pesky world-famous literature academics you demanded me to list so many times and then said nothing about). i guess it's safe to say 'deep reading' involves more than an adult reading the mr. men books. deep reading is about sustained concentration and about the ability to analyze both formal cogency and deeper sub-texts/thematics.

The deep reader, protected from distractions and attuned to the nuances of language, enters a state that psychologist Victor Nell, in a study of the psychology of pleasure reading, likens to a hypnotic trance. Nell found that when readers are enjoying the experience the most, the pace of their reading actually slows. The combination of fast, fluent decoding of words and slow, unhurried progress on the page gives deep readers time to enrich their reading with reflection, analysis, and their own memories and opinions. It gives them time to establish an intimate relationship with the author, the two of them engaged in an extended and ardent conversation like people falling in love.
what's the last book you read that made you experience this dilbert? just curious.

Strangely, I've never been able to experience that whilst reading an e-book. Was recently trying to read something off Project Gutenberg but eventually just said "fuck it, I'll go to the library instead." Perhaps I just don't relax quite as well in a computer chair as lying down with a good book.

i think there is something phenomenologically and perhaps psychologically more difficult in reading and concentrating on a screen. there's like a resistance to concentration, or something. i can't get shit out of ebooks either (never owned a kindle or such like). reading online papers or pdf documents is a complete chore. it just lacks the interactivity and ability to scrawl notes/underline/highlight/turn corners etc. that makes real reading such an exploratory, intuitive, and ad-hoc learning experience.
