hard as shit to learn chinese as a non-speaker. pronunciations are a bitch.
As an American, Spanish is the obvious choice. Especially in FL, CA, AZ, TX, NM. I have a functional grasp on Spanish.

Yeah Chinese has like 4 tonal variations for each sound. Russian only has two, hard letter and soft letter.
5 actually. neutral, up, down, up and down and short stopped.

what's so "lol" about it? yeah, there was a time when people around the globe actually needed to learn russian. my mother, who doesn't speak any foreign language at all, has no problem in india and china when she goes on business to those coutries - a lot of people still speak russian. but that's history. don't pick russian, unless it's required for your major (literature, history) or purely for lulz.

Most of the Chinese in NY speak canto, but everyone seems to know 2 or 3 other dialects.

Because it was all hush hush at the time. No one was supposed to know his occupation (fill in the blanks). That friend ended up having to flee cuba because his dad had spoken out against the system.

Canto and Minan/Taiwanese is a lot more similar to each other than mandarin, but still huge difference. I guess it's like the difference between romance languages. one good thing is that theres a uniform writing system lol.

Mandarin is most common in China, Cantonese is used mostly in Guanghzo, Canton and Hong Kong and Taiwanese/Min nan is used in Taiwan, Fujian and some parts of the coastal south. Theres also Shanghaiese which just sounds like terrible chinese opera lol.

edit: Forgot about Hakka which sounds terrible as well, its slightly used in Taiwan too.

yeah. he was unable to walk straight for a week or so. he always laughs at that incident now, but, honestly, even thinking about that makes me want to cower >.<

btw, i once had an opportunity to have a close look at the kind of stuff you hokey goalkeepers wear, and i have to say - you are either the bravest or the most stupid people out there in sports. you and handball goalies who gust wear jumpsuits.
