Nah, we don't use calculators on exams for my calc class either. They give you numbers you can actually work in your head and on paper. That way you really learn the process instead of just knowing what to punch in the calculator.
Most math books adopted by the schools I went to had a horrible habit of inserting trick questions instead of simply showing you how to do something. I mostly used my own materials to figure shit out, but a lot of people took to simply copying the answers in the back of the book and skimming by on great assignment scores, but dismal test scores.
Yep that's a stupid way of doing things, but they do say "Cs get degrees."

Weird. I never had a prof that collected homework.

College math I took was far more test-oriented for the final grade, as it should be. Gradeschool was more like "do your best and you'll pass." Junior and high school was when kids started figuring out how to work the system in their short term favor.

I never got that you're allowed to use graphical calculators in A-Level maths exams. In my resit in january i forgot to bring/borrow one before the exam and there turned out to be an 8 mark question (out of 72) on plotting two equations and stating where they intercepted. Needless to say it took me longer than everyone else to complete that question
I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.

Most HW is done by tutorials/recitals instead of lectures.

Went to see if I could get my suspicions confirmed. Remembered that I asked, and got this on April 8. They were. Perhaps this could shed some light on the problem:

We've dealt with the same thing here many times over the years, and I
basically agree with you that it is ambiguous enough to simply avoid
ever writing anything of this form.

There is no standard rule that tells you to do the multiplication
first, though the rule makes sense at least visually. Some texts
actually teach such a rule, but forget to tell their readers that it
is not standard. The left to right approach yielding 288 is the only
interpretation that fits the usual set of rules; but it is so easy to
misread that I'd avoid it. The fact that mathematicians hardly ever
use the in-line division symbol in the first place, using the fraction
bar instead, makes it a moot point.

Here are some of my own discussions of the topic:

  Implied Multiplication and TI Calculators
  http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/72166.html

Your attempt to solve this as an equation doesn't really do anything,
because when you solve you are making implicit assumptions about the
order of operations.

If you have any further questions, feel free to write back.

The left->right 24 * 12 would be the logical way to read it, and dividing (9+3) from both sides as I tried earlier (for 48/2 = x/12) seems to confirm it. So you can all stop saying that 288 is stupid. As suggested before, it is indeed sloppy mathematical 'grammar' to blame for the confusion, and it even throws some calculators for a loop.

Maybe that's not the word I should have used. Replace it with this, and let's bury the fucking hatchet.

12/6 = 2
3*2 = 6
12/3*2 = 6??
No if you split a term you must then put it into brackets. ie.
12/(3*2)

Same applies to 2(9+3), if you split it with a multiplication sign you then have to write it (2*(9+3)).

48÷2(9+3) = 288
48÷(2(9+3)) = 2

simple as.

48÷2(9+3)
48÷2(12)
48÷2*12
24*12
288

do we really have to keep doing this?

288    42%    42% - 36
2    57%    57% - 48

By general consensus... 2 wins.

Also

2(12)= (2*12) not 2*12

= what I just said in my last two posts this thread

The amount of silly stuff that general consensus has supported in the past sort of leads me to disregard the results of this poll.

Also

2(12)= (2*12) not 2*12
General consensus doesn't mean squat.

Also, why does 2(12) = (2*12) ??? Where does that come from???
