BIDMAS gives 288
If the 2 was part of the bracket operation, it would be in more brackets. Saying that is just wrong.
Poll
48÷2(9+3) = ??
288 | 43% | 43% - 40 | ||||
2 | 56% | 56% - 51 | ||||
Total: 91 |
hes wrong though?

You first do whatever is in the brackets, then indices, then moving from left to right you do all multiplications/divisions in order then repeat the process for addition/subtraction.
Seems to be the most basic/reliable method of getting it right.

I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.
didn't this get closed? : /

Would have to be 48/(2(9+3)) for it to be 2.
48/2(9+3) = 288
This is the correct answer and explanation, I dont understand why there is still an argumentTrotskygrad wrote:

any sane person will tell you 2
this is all about order of operations (sounds like a military term iknorite) and PEMDAS (parentheses exponents multiplication division addition subtraction)
you perform the operations IN THAT ORDER
multiplication BEFORE division
@ Jebus
2(9+3) is an implied multiplication... still multiplication.
hence the correct answer is 2

obviously 288.
Anybody who says 2 doesn't understand basic elementary school math.

Except that Multiplication and Division are interchangeable as are Addition and Subtraction. Could be PEDMSA and it would mean the same thing.-=]NS[=-Eagle wrote:

My brain gets 2, but my T-84 gets 288. Did I fail order of operations? Fuck and I have calculus in a month.
It's quite obviously 16.
48÷2(9+3)
48÷2(12)
48÷12+12
4+12
16
48÷2(9+3)
48÷2(12)
48÷12+12
4+12
16

Is 2*3÷6*5 = 5 or 1/5 ???
This thread makes me go at the people who think they know math, its symbols, and order of operations.

can't tell if you're trolling me like Poseidon or what
What cracks me up is how many people can see multiplication signs where clearly none exist.
parentheses count as multiplication.
The irony of guns, is that they can save lives.

Also, War Man is right (for once! )
2(9+3) = 2(12) = 2*12
The ( ) gives preference to the addition operation inside, not the multiplication operation outside.
