This is fascinating, I found a thread about this on another forum...link

If you type the same equation into google, you'll see this has appeared on numerous other forums.

Pretty much every time, the poll comes up with 50% for both answers, even on a physics forum, they were split 50/50.

I haven't studied maths since A Levels but my way of working that out would always give 288. A lot of calculus experts, engineers etc. say 2 .

Interested to see how the poll turns out here.

(mods please keep in this section to be seen)

2 x (9+3) = 24

48/24 = 2

how do you get 288 lol?

Always 288, everyone who says 2 is stupid, srs.

Would have to be  48/(2(9+3)) for it to be 2.
48/2(9+3) = 288

he's doing 48/2 first, then multiplying it by 12

any sane person will tell you 2

this is all about order of operations (sounds like a military term iknorite) and PEMDAS (parentheses exponents multiplication division addition subtraction)

you perform the operations IN THAT ORDER

multiplication BEFORE division

@ Jebus

2(9+3) is an implied multiplication... still multiplication.

hence the correct answer is 2

48/2(9+3) = 48/2(12) = 48/24 = 2

I win.

Way I was taught was this;

48/2*(9+3)

48/24 = 2

actually fuckit

there is no correct answer...

it's a fuckin notation problem...

this is why you are supposed to use LONG division bars.

like

48
-----------
2(9+3)

or

48
---- * (9+3)
2

Shouldn't the 2 be at the end then?

No, that's why you write brackets, like I stated a few posts above. Written as in the OP, it's 288, no discussion.

I think everyone with basic high school math skills will get 2 on first sight (like me).
You could think it out further and get 288, but its just because of the notation that you cant be 100% sure which one it is.

2(9+3) is a single term.

whats 48÷2A =

where A = 12

Brackets
Exponents
Division
Multiplication
Addition
Subtraction

Therefore its 2.  It is pretty poor notation though.

What if you put in x for (9+3) so that it was 48/2x.  Would you still decide to switch it to 48x/2?
