How far are you going to OC it?  Let me know how it goes too.  I was looking into that mobo but went with the GA-Z68XP-UD3P instead and I can't seem to get it beyond 4.3ghz.    It's rock solid at 4.3 but can't get it to boot above that.  Not sure if I just got a mediocre chip or if my board sucks.

Well I built this right before the 2nd-gen i5/i7 chips came out, and I wish I'd waited since they seem so easy to OC.  But it was built with BF3 in mind, and I think it should serve its purpose (plus the i7-950 was under $200):

Gigabyte GA-X58-USB3
i7 950 @ 4.14ghz  -  cooled by Noctua something-or-other (it's got 120mms in push-pull)
6gb Corsair DDR3 @ 1800mhz
80gb Intel SSD (Win 7 64bit + Battlefield)
1.5 TB Western Digital 7200 rpm
...a couple of DVD-R drives...
EVGA GTX 580 1.5gb (slight OC to 825/2100)
Creative X-Fi
Corsair HX-1000 Power Supply
Corsair HS1A Headset
Logitech G5
Samsung 23" Widescreen Monitor

(...and I know the HX-1000 is complete overkill for this.  Call it future-proofing...)

On the exact same board I have my 2500k running at 4.6GHz @ 1.38V, that's with a Noctua NH-D14 though so I can't say far the stock cooler could take you. I did run at 4.8GHz @ 1.4V for a while but I got a crash in Prime95 after a couple of hours so I went back down to 4.6.

I think nowadays 8gig is about the default for a gaming system, if you're using photoshop heavily or doing a whole load of video editing you can justify stretching to 16gig.

lol I'm so out of the loop with this stuff. I remember when 4GB of RAM was incredible, now it's the bare minimum. Computers are coming with 16GB of RAM now, makes my current computer with only 2 gigs look like crap.

It will feel wierd the day we are talking about Terabyte, HDD's have been there a while now but when ram gets there... We will be able to say "I remember when we counted RAM in megabyte (kilobyte for some?)" and feel old about it...

I have a hyper 212+ and I'm running 4.3ghz @ 1.275v and after 12 hours of prime95 it never saw over 55c so there is plenty of room in that sense... but no matter what voltage I set I can't get a boot above that 4.3ghz.   I tried all the way up to 1.45v and still no boot @ 4.4ghz.

Ive booted and done superpi at 5.2ghz so far

4.3 is plenty for BF3!

Super Pi is nothing compared to Prime95, 6 hours of that bench is pretty brutal.

Having said that I think I could easily get my CPU to sit at 4.8-5GHz stable, I'm fairly sure the thermal paste wasn't applied perfectly and there are a few settings I could mess with. Fact is though that at 4.6 I don't feel like my CPU is ever holding back any game I play (even with a 580) so I'd rather make sure I'm not putting too much heat through the chip.

As twoblacklines says though, 4.3 is more than enough to keep BF3 happy, hell I'm fairly sure your cpu wouldn't be bottlenecking you at stock speeds unless you're running a 580 or 2.

I am But only 1440x900 atm.

Im upgrading to a 27" 1900x1080 soon so will see how it copes, going to leave £400 aside to see if i need another 580 to run that resolution.

Apparently it runs fine on very high settings on a 460GTX at 1920x1080.

So i could have bought a 27" monitor and a 560ti for the price i paid for a 580GTX.. FFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU

- Case: Corsair 650D Case
- Power Supply: OCZ ZX 850 Gold Rated PSU
- CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz Sandybridge overclocked to 4.60GHz
- Motherboard: Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
- Cooler: OcUK H2 Flo Extreme Cooler
- RAM: 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 Dual Channel Kit (16GB Upgrade Available)
- Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB 6GB/s SATA-II 32MB Cache & SSD Options

If it doesn't run BF3 on Ultra settings it's getting another GTX 580.

*edit - Got another 580 anyway and upped the RAM to 16GB.

6850/Phenom II x4 945@stock/8GB/GA-990FXA-UD3 is silky smooth on high at 1280x1024.  Christ this game has good graphics!  Doesn't even push temps much.
