Well yeah, safe to say that a nuclear accident is probably the scariest thing that could happen because the damage is lasting, which is why I can understand the fear people have for it. But at the same time, there have been very few accidents compared to the amount of reactors there are around and how long they have been used. Something in the magnitude of increasing cancer risk for thousands will, I believe,
never happen again.
It's definitely not the end all or as safe as all possible alternatives but the amount of energy it yields goes far beyond the output of any other method... nuclear fusion even more so (if succesful, more energy return than input) but that's arguably even more dangerous (imagine what happens if the cooling of a reactor wall in there fails, you have a live sun charring everything in its vicinity).
