i remember reading a really good expose on mubarak and the history of egypt's so called 'democratic' politics in the economist about 6 months ago... basically they have a party-based system that is so stacked in favour of mubarak's party every time that it is effectively a dictatorship. the vote and the ability for the individual people of the country to make a difference is basically nil/worthless. he's a real crook and the only reason he has managed to keep his hold on power for so long is because he's pro-west and a puppet rather than anti-west and a pain in the ass.

more power to the egyptian people, i say... it would be hypocritical of us in the west to express displeasure at a TRUE act of democratic action/revolution. lets see how you americans handle a real act of self-determination from an important middle-eastern 'ally'.

women and minorities had their own struggle to wage in western democracies too... lets not turn a blind-eye to any history of our own pre-dating the new millenium. what's important is that they have a fundamentally fair system of democracy that allows for real power to be given to the people. majority-rule (whatever social implications that may entail) is more important than dictatorship.

That's fair enough, I guess, but my point was that the Brotherhood's agenda isn't to lead the country, but to end Mubarak's regime.

On the brighter sides of things, they are, after all, rioting in the name of freedom of speech and democracy, rather than fighting the west. It may be a long shot, but if the US stay out of this, and the main enemy remains the dictatorship, you never know, this may end well.

However, if the west intervenes in an effort to support Mubarak or hinder a revolution, it's going to be Iran all over again.

I agree that we shouldn't intervene. It's one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't situations. If he retains power and we didn't support him it could be trouble down the road too...

Edit - You can't support a revolution or whatever unless you're willing to send in your military to aid them. We did that in Iraq after Desert Storm and it led to reprisals and tens of thousands of deaths. Since we aren't willing to send in our military, we shouldn't openly support the revolutionaries either. It's a shitty road to tread but it's just best to ignore it and hope it goes away somehow We're gonna be the asshole either way.

Yupp, and that seems to be the general line of everyone. Condone the use of government violence, and then sit back and watch.

It'll be interesting to see how loyal the military is to the government. They are, after all, not in the military by choice, and would be fighting their brothers and sisters if called in to confront the rioters.
