Why do Atheists celebrate Christmas?

As an Atheist I don't believe in any of it still I celebrate it, love getting Christmas gifts and the good food. At home my excuse is my uber Catholic family and at work is the lucrative side of it but am I being the biggest hypocrite here? Or because Christmas is only about spending time with my family and consumerism it becomes acceptable?

But I should get time off for boxing day.

And anyway, Dec 25 has more to do with the winter solstice and the pagan festivals which go with it, then any birth of some douche who wasn't even born on that date.

lol...  Well, most of Christmas is about as religious as Thanksgiving...

Hell, Christ was most likely born in the spring anyway.  The Church just decided to consume the pagan holiday of Saturnalia.

That tradition far exceeds Christianity, and was adopted by the church as a way of enabling people to convert without disrupting thier festivals.

It's the material/family side that is universal in appeal.  The easiest way to explain it is that most Atheists view Christmas the same way that most Christians view Halloween.  Most people, religious or not, don't actually believe in the folklore behind Samhain, but they can appreciate the fun connected to dressing up and eating candy.

It's also like how Atheists can still enjoy Easter from the family side as well.

I'd like to know why a group of atheists would put up a billboard preaching reason. Idiots like that are just as bad as the evangelicals they claim to despise. Way to be a bunch of dickheads for no reason.

It is a bit dogmatic.  Granted, down here in the South, we have a lot of religious billboards, so it's only natural that some Atheist ones would eventually crop up.  If I'm not mistaken, this particular billboard was put up in Georgia -- one of the more religious states.

Sure, but why put them up in New Jersey of all places... Either way, it's nothing more than trolling and a fantastic way to get your message ignored/scorned.

I get it but isn't this a little bit of wanting the cake and eating it too? I'm speaking against myself here, a few years back I was a really good Atheist ruining everyone Christmas by ridiculing it and make my family despair but these days with children around and me getting tired of drama I actually enjoy it and my family keeps teasing me saying that soon I'll be joining them at midnight's Mass

Ah, so it was NJ?   Well yeah, that's not really necessary up there.

But yeah, I'm ok with a little confrontation in the Bible Belt just because of the predominant evangelism down here.  It's not necessary in less religious places though.

I thought the "you know it's a myth" sign was referring to the idea of how awesome NYC is.

Spoiler (highlight to read):
The sign is outside the Lincoln tunnel which leads from NJ to NYC.

lol...   I know what you mean.  Well, for the record, my best friend is religious, and I've attended a service at his church up in Arlington.  It was a nice place.  The church is more like an auditorium in size and design.

I think the central point is that communion is a concept that extends beyond religion.  Spending quality time with the family does not require religion aside from having a convenient justification to bring everyone together at the same time.

The enjoyment I get from a holiday like Christmas is not due to religion itself.

The food is good, other than that and time off it has no appeal.
