It's the name of the article so get bent mods.
The other day, my editor asked me, "Think people feel uncomfortable when they see overweight people making out on television?"

Because I can be kind of clueless — I'm not much of a TV person — I had no idea what she was talking about, so she steered me to this CNN article, about the CBS sitcom Mike & Molly. As CNN explains, "the show centers around a couple who meet at an Overeaters Anonymous group [and] has drawn complaints for its abundance of fat jokes [as well as] cries from some viewers who aren't comfortable watching intimacy between two plus-sized actors."

My initial response was: Hmm, being overweight is one thing — those people are downright obese! And while I think our country's obsession with physical perfection is unhealthy, I also think it's at least equally crazy, albeit in the other direction, to be implicitly promoting obesity! Yes, anorexia is sick, but at least some slim models are simply naturally skinny. No one who is as fat as Mike and Molly can be healthy. And obesity is costing our country far more in terms of all the related health problems we are paying for, by way of our insurance, than any other health problem, even cancer.

So anyway, yes, I think I'd be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other ... because I'd be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything. To be brutally honest, even in real life, I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room — just like I'd find it distressing if I saw a very drunk person stumbling across a bar or a heroine addict slumping in a chair.

Now, don't go getting the wrong impression: I have a few friends who could be called plump. I'm not some size-ist jerk. And I also know how tough it can be for truly heavy people to psych themselves up for the long process of slimming down. (For instance, the overweight maintenance guy at my gym has talked to me a little bit about how it seems worthless for him to even try working out, because he's been heavy for as long as he can remember.)

But ... I think obesity is something that most people have a ton of control over. It's something they can change, if only they put their minds to it.

(I'm happy to give you some nutrition and fitness suggestions if you need them — but long story short, eat more fresh and unprocessed foods, read labels and avoid foods with any kind of processed sweetener in them whether it's cane sugar or high fructose corn syrup, increase the amount of fiber you're getting, get some kind of exercise for 30 minutes at least five times a week, and do everything you can to stand up more — even while using your computer — and walk more. I admit that there's plenty that makes slimming down tough, but YOU CAN DO IT! Trust me. It will take some time, but you'll also feel so good, physically and emotionally. A nutritionist or personal trainer will help — and if you can't afford one, visit your local YMCA for some advice.)

Then again, I guess these characters are in Overeaters Anonymous. So ... points for trying?

Then again, I tend to think most television shows are a kind of junk food for the mind and body. The boob tube gives us an excuse to turn off both our brains and our bodies and probably does a helluva lot to contribute to the obesity problem, over all. So ... I don't know.

What do you guys think? Fat people making out on TV — are you cool with it? Do you think I'm being an insensitive jerk?

This article has been causing a shit storm recently because: it's not very nice QQ .

Most fat people are fat because it's their own damn fault. If they didn't drink, eat shitty foods, and not exercise more often they wouldn't be obese fuckers. I think this whole 'accept fat people's life style' thing is insanity. Unhealthy and unproductive lifestyles shouldn't be accepted. Being overweight isn't any better than being a heroin addict or an alcoholic, we shouldn't pretend like it is.

The only thing in that article that caught my eye for being 'mean' was this:

So anyway, yes, I think I'd be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other ... because I'd be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything. To be brutally honest, even in real life, I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room
Saying that he finds it 'aesthetically displeasing' to even see a fat guy walk across a room just makes him sound like a total fuckhead...but no one has a right to not be offended, so who the fuck cares if he's mean OR that he finds it displeasing?  But then, he does say "very, very fat"...so I don't think he means your run of the mill fat guy.

Since when did being overweight lead to being unproductive?  Unless you mean the so-obese-they-can-barely-live people, in which case I would agree.

Note:  I haven't seen this show so I have no idea what these people look like.  lol

I would imagine that even fat people don't want to watch this.  Who wants to admit that the only lovin' a fat person can get is from another fat person.  Example...King of Queens...fat guy with a "hot" skinny chick.  Makes fat guys think it's possible to get a hot chick. I can't think of a example of the other way around though...

Being "overweight" and obese are different things.  Most "normal looking" Americans (guys with size 32-34 pants and size 4-6 women) are still probably a lot closer to the BMI cutoff for being overweight than they realize.  However, obesity is the kind of fatness you can't hide.  Rolls on rolls, moar cushion for the pushin', etc. etc...

I fully believe that genetics can make you prone to being overweight, but genetic disorders that make you truly morbidly obese are so rare that essentially anyone claiming that can be assumed to be full of shit (and lots of food).

obscenely overweight people should pay the full price of their medical bills (I live where healthcare is free.. I'm positive 90% of the people on the operation table have weight related issues). I don't care about anything else they do.

It only starts getting gross when it's seriously too much. Seeing some 300+ pound whale in the KFC gorging away as much food as I do and moving around does look very unpleasant. Yeah, call me an asshole. I find it very unpleasant to watch someone with anorexia walking around in a tanktop too.

This is true, fat people usually have a predisposition to being fat in the first place, but never to such extremes that you can't get a fairly normal build.

So a fat person can't eat as much as you do?  Unless you eat a real lot, I don't quite understand what you mean...

I'd say your both right.  My family is more prone to obesity; it took a lot of work for me to lose the extra weight I carried and it still takes work to make sure I don't gain any of it back.

I was eating a 36 bucket of hot wings with some other stuff, so yeah, ALOT. The woman who looked like she was 300 pounds did the same. I hadn't been in the KFC for a year and the first thing I saw was one of the fattest creatures I had seen in years. It just shows that she didn't even try to slim down. Being disgustingly fat really does look disgusting imo. Nevermind her table manners.

I dunno about anyone else, but I'm completely unmotivated to exercise outside of team athletics. Jogging? Boring. Lifting weights? Boring. Give me a bat and a glove and I'll be doing windsprints happily.

I have to agree, you're also inclined to give up more easily if you're on your own.. team excersising is way more effective.

Yea, I hear ya.  People need to know their limits, and not everyone is active enough or has a fast enough metabolism to be able to eat that much and not pack it on.  Personally, I hate eating out unless I'm in a booth and can't see the people around me...I really hate watching people (anyone, really) eat...especially messy foods like chicken wings or enormous burgers.

I plateau based on my exercise level. I don't fluctuate up or down even if I go months without exercise. I don't understand how people can balloon up into the 300s+ honestly. It would take a massive effort.

I stopped growing around 17 and then started filling out. My natural weight is around 240 lbs. That's exercising every day but not watching what I eat...

Not really--think about it, say you mindlessly eat and what you snack on constantly is energy-packed crap food, like non-diet soda, chips, cookies, candy, etc...  You could seiously pack on a few pounds a week if you ate all the wrong foods consistantly.

I definitely feel better if I exercise more often, but yeah, I'm skinny with or without exercise.
