So I don't know if a lot of you have seen the TV show Hoarders

but where does the government come in?  I mean if someone wants to live by themselves in such a fucked up condition fine by me.  But what about children who have no choice?  How do you prevent that?  I mean should homes have required inspections?  Ya I know that sounds crazy but the health hazards are undeniable.

So what is the solution?

Plus there's the rat problem and others.
Environmental health inspectors can sometimes force cleanups if there is a health hazard.

Follow the rats home?
Until it reaches that point its probably not a serious issue.

Social services can remove children if there's a problem, eg if they're turning up at school covered in scabs.
- Which is one reason kids need to be force to attend school.

so reactive versus proactive is your solution?

Thought the government shouldn't interfeer with your rights to do anything ... hoarders included ...

I do however agree with you, some sort of local health inspection ... not sure how that could be implemented but somehow children should be protected against stupid parents ... hoarders and smoking indoors with children present etc etc ...

OK, install a tv camera in every room of every home.

Outlaw private home ownership, have mandatory inspections every month.

In soviet russia the govt hoards you!

But really, reactive is probably good enough in this case, you can't stop people doing weird stuff in their own home. Until the effect is noticed outside its barely a social issue.

Usually the neighbours or someone complains. In most countries they do have these services and agencies that sort shit like this out.

i remember seeing an episode in the UK version, they knew it was a problem with one old polish geezer as he started to shit in the yard in full view of his neigbours because he could no longer access the khazi considering he had filled his house with junk (again).

If there are kids involved usually someone would call child services and they'd probably take the kids away

Usually a neighbor ends up calling.  Or the person gets killed by a pile of their own crap.  Mah' brother doing apt maintenance got a scrape on calf whilst walking through a hoarders apartment.  It festered and they had to put him on some heavy antibiotics.

I have been watching the series on Netflix.  Most of the episodes with young children, taking the kids away was the only way to get them to finally clean house.

What's to stop them from filling that house up with crap again?

I would like to see that actually. Also, I was half watching an episode of hoarders a few days ago. An older lady had been shitting in grocery bags and throwing them in the stairwell of her two story house....   for the past TEN years. There was also a 300lb pile of cat shit that all over the dining room table. Spoiler alert, that house was condemned and destroyed.
