The only way to make things polychromatic is to manipulate light radii. Torches and glowstone have  luminance of roughly 15. Look at the three-wide half-block steps at the water slide '/rift night' and you'll see that the center steps are darker than the ones bordering them due to decreasing light levels.
Yea, I know about the light radii.
I meant, like, diamond/gold/iron blocks, lol.

Also, the /rift commands didn't work for me

Although, i DID manage to fly, for like, 1/2 second

With one lava pool, clay, iron, gold, diamond and charcoal-filled exception, I couldn't bring myself to play many worlds longer than five to ten hours apiece, if even that. Some I just flat out restarted.

Online play adds a completely new dimension in that there's actually a point to building something other than a dirt house. You can actually cooperatively-build structures and throw opinions back and forth over what should go where. On an active server, the world evolves whether or not you're playing, and if protected from griefing, is worth coming back to add stuff to or just look at. There's something inherently satisfying about making a bunch of one-meter blocks actually look like something.

Personally, I would have preferred a terrain-generated template to start out with so the city looked a bit more natural. But flatlands are almost non-existent in the terrain generator, so in its own way, this is unique. It's actual mining that is pointless, and there's no point adventuring into the unknown, because it's all the same amount of dirt up from a flat layer of bedrock.

Very true.
Right now, if you have dug up diamond, crafted every utility and seen every block, every world thereafter will be the same over and over again.
In fact, the only reason I started a second world was because I built my house too far away from my spawn.
The only thing worth going for is visiting the Nether once.

Until Notch adds an adventure mode and/or unique items it'll be boring.

For me, a random world's excitement depends on the extensiveness of the cave system closest to my spawn point. In the case of the world shown here, I haven't found the end of it in hours of exploration. Every new branch I find seems to lead to the outside of one island or another, often with the the short use of a pickaxe to adjoin tunnels, and more often without.

Dungeons abound, but harvested grain, bread and saddles don't make much of a treasure chest reward, though. More gear, mineral blocks, diamonds and golden apples, please. Also wouldn't be that unrealistic to see some mushrooms growing on the mossy cobblestone.

I've played Minecraft long enough that I still don't feel cheated. It depends on the value you tack onto $/game. Some of the Steam deals are ludicrous exceptions to the rule, so it's best to discount them when considering products not available on Steam. Still, anyone who didn't grab Minecraft during the alpha pretty much missed the best time to do so.

What Minecraft really needs, aside from a more robust exception fail-safe system, is an update to the terrain generator. Currently, all we have to explore on the surface really is one archipelago after another. Sometimes it will be a fairly big island with a giant volcanic-looking crater, but it's still just another island. As large a world as Minecraft generates and as many biomes as it supposedly has, I'm kind of disappointed in the variety. I wouldn't mind seeing more plants, flat expanses of land, seas, small mountains and so forth. Underground, I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more than just one identical tunnel after another. There's a lot of running water, but hardly any pools to speak of. There are no stalagmites or stalactites other than the ones you build yourself (meh) and large rooms are very rare and are mostly rather small. Digging down poses the hazard of falling into magma, but while digging up sometimes poses the same concern, the results are very easy to avoid. Having the risk of a cave-in would be interesting. The ability for gravel to break through at least one layer of smoothstone once 'woken up' could result in you having to dig your way out of a dozen meters or more.

It's still just the beta, and while I can't see the full version changing all that much, I can still hope.

Just the suspicion that once you finish it, another exception will occur and replace 2/3 of your theater with a waterfall.
