How far shaders have come:
Tazz fired the old Incredicraft map file at me, having been updated for 1.12.2. Nostalgia trip flying around looking at stuff. Thanks for that!
I think the most tedious thing I can remember there is having to go around fixing broken terrain generation transitions..

- Photorealistic 2K textures + New SEUS E7.1 Ray Tracing VS vanilla Minecraft Graphics Comparison [4K] (youtube, modern textures. very cool use of ladders.)
- Minecraft RAY TRACING - Unbelieveable Architecture Renderings - Photorealistic [SEUS PTGI, umsoea] (youtube, modern textures)
- Minecraft Ray Tracing Live Play: A Path Traced Showcase? (youtube walkthrough, more of a technical showcase)

Oh man the memories.
I can't even begin to think the amount of hours I put into that server, uni was so good.
I don't even recognise that last screenshot. Where is that??

It's somewhere under the big tree by the spawn platform. Entry in the tiny building next to the trunk. Bit of a winding path through what were supposed to be mines and/or a redstone lab.
e: haha wow, that music circuit in the pokeball building still works
e2: there's even a massive subway system that I totally overlooked

One cool thing you can do with Twitch is install the Curse/Twitch desktop client and manage your Minecraft mods from a decent library there.
If you want to revive your fear of the unknown in this game and don't mind dying unfairly every now and then, give RLcraft a shot. Adds a ton of new prefab structures, dungeons, as well as items, mobs, randomized mob variants, RPG skill building, tech level progression, and survival elements. Works out pretty nicely for being such a mishmash.
You'll even have to deal with grues from Zork if you stay in pitch black for too long.
Nerd stuff - quick starter guide (more detailed tutorials on youtube):
Spoiler (highlight to read):
modpack is a bit nomadic exploration heavy. hunt & loot for items and experience. use experience to level resource skills to the point necessary to access resources (steel requires 4 points into mining out of 32 possible mining levels, for instance). may have to temporarily abandon areas if they become infested with powerful mobs like dragons.
part 1: pick biome carefully. two hot or two cold is challenging before you have the gear to weather it.
part 2: break gravel for flint. break flint on rocks. break leaves for sticks. create flint knife with stick & broken flint. break grass with flint knife. combine 3 plant fibers for plant twine. combine broken flint, plant twine, and stick for flint axe.
part 3: chop trees for logs (will only get if you use an axe; one chop at the base is sufficient, the whole tree falls down). place logs on the ground and shift-right click with axe to convert to planks. use planks to create crafting table. use crafting table to create flint pickaxe. mine stone. create stone items as normal.
part 4: lighting & mob-proofing - crafted torches need lit, but flint & steel is difficult to get early. instead, sugarcane to paper, paper & wood slabs to matchbooks. use slab floors to block appearance of most mobs in areas not well lit. place a hatch on the outside upper side of your doors to reinforce against mobs that can break them down.
part 5: farming - modpack incorporates seasons mod. any crop can be grown with greenhouse glass somewhere above it. otherwise, it will not grow out of season even with bonemeal.

- create an RLcraft instance from Twitch client (interface is fairly self-explanatory, and creates a folder for minecraft 1.12.2, forge, and the 100+ mods in this pack)
- optifine 1.12.2 of your choosing (in my case, jar placed in ...\Curse\Minecraft\Instances\RLCraft\mods)
- texture pack: I recommend "default improved," or "chroma hills" for screenshots into instance folder (in my case zip placed in ...\Curse\Minecraft\Instances\RLCraft\resourcepacks)
- shaders: I recommend sildur's enhanced default (in my case, zip placed in ...\Curse\Minecraft\Instances\RLCraft\shaderpacks)

Anyone still playing this crap, I guess there's a mandatory migration from java to microsoft accounts. If you don't migrate, you eventually won't be able to log on. I don't know if that means account deletion or if you'll still be able to migrate after that point. My STO account got borked because of this kind of transfer stuff, but hopefully MS manages this better.
The incentive is capes and 2fa security. The incentive I want is free access to Windows 10 Edition, which probably won't happen. I dunno, I didn't fully read the pages.

I tried to get back into the game a few times, but even with the newest additions I always pretty much just burn out at carving a home in the side of a cliff. I don't think I'll ever get around to making another survival megabase.
Planet Crafter, nice to have some control over the environment, and less-cubey block placement. Dislike too much early access on my playlist though. Same for Sims 4 build mode, playing around with home or apartment layouts I'd rather live in than my own limited space. But that game is never quite complete, bleeding players for features and mechanics that should honestly be in the vanilla mode. Mod content ftw.

I have one cheap ship. Haven't been on in years, but wouldn't mind taking a look sometime.
