well here's a veritable hotbed of shit-talking and constant news-topics...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11325699

A senior papal aide has come under pressure to apologise after saying arriving at Heathrow airport was like landing in a "Third World" country.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11313328

Pope Benedict has said he wants to "extend the hand of friendship" to the whole of the UK during his visit. He also urged the UK to resist "more aggressive forms of secularism" after being welcomed by the Queen at Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11332515

A speech in which the Pope appeared to associate atheism with the Nazis has prompted criticism from humanist organisations.
thoughts? personally i am opposed to a state-sponsored visit/welcome of any head of a religious insitution. the pope included.

he's kicking up an absolute shit-storm here in the united kingdom, along with his aides. so many terrible statements.

To be fair, unless you're at Terminal 5, Heathrow Airport is like a third world airport...

But fuck the Pope. I guess he feels like given how unpopular his visit is he has to be an asshole back.

that's a good question.

buddhism really is an exception to the rule. probably because of the way their structure and theology is different to other world religions.

and im pretty sure he was welcomed as a symbol against chinese occupation... a political visit, rather than a spiritual one.

suggestions of it... but his main history is in catholic academia/scholasticism/theology... as a liberal catholic, mind you

except now he's hyper conservative and is opposed to all the reformations of the second vatican council. nobody knows why.

hence all the ridiculous statements like "condoms increase the risk of AIDS" and "atheism is akin to nazism"

i love how that video has this huge triumphant 'victory' or 'freedom' vibe to it, even though 90% of it is focussing on the police/security control arranged to welcome the leader of an oppressive church... wonderful. im glad england still has its vocally skeptic intellectuals.

In all honesty, there's a lot of anti-Catholic hatred spewed by the evangelicals with almost as much venom as their hatred towards Muslims, so there'd probably be some protests. The Pope is a head of state so he should be treated as such when visiting other sovereign nations. There certainly wouldn't be any uproar about our President meeting him.

the whole point of protest about the pope's 'state' (i.e. political) visit, though, is that the Vatican ISN'T a real state.

here's a quote from the link earlier from ghettoperson:

We, the undersigned, share the view that Pope Ratzinger should not be given the honour of a state visit to this country. We believe that the pope, as a citizen of Europe and the leader of a religion with many adherents in the UK, is of course free to enter and tour our country. However, as well as a religious leader, the pope is a head of state, and the state and organisation of which he is head has been responsible for:

Opposing the distribution of condoms and so increasing large families in poor countries and the spread of Aids.

Promoting segregated education.

Denying abortion to even the most vulnerable women.

Opposing equal rights for lesbians, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Failing to address the many cases of abuse of children within its own organisation.

The state of which the pope is head has also resisted signing many major human rights treaties and has formed its own treaties ("concordats") with many states which negatively affect the human rights of citizens of those states. In any case, we reject the masquerading of the Holy See as a state and the pope as a head of state as merely a convenient fiction to amplify the international influence of the Vatican.

A bunch of raging atheists. Who cares?

This whole turning your back on people simply because you have a difference of views is childish.
