The reason the 6870 isn't better than the 5870 is because the 5870 was a dual GPU whereas this one will be single, when they do release the dual GPU version for the 6 series it'll be called the 6990 which should in theory blow the dual GPU 5870 out of the water.

The OP said it all, and half the topic is about how stupid they are for constantly changing their naming conventions.

Which is true, there's no need to be unnecessarily complicated.

5870 was a single GPU mekingtons

5890 was the dual GPU.

Oh yeah, OP confused me. Oh wait, it's not even the 6870 it's the 6970.....you know what fuck this. Why did people even bring up the 5870.

And to think all this time I loved ATi because I could actually understand their naming conventions and easily compare cards to one another. But those days have long passed, and I've since moved on to nVidia for now.

I mean I wouldn't say I'm stupid enough to give up on a brand because their numbering convention confuses me, usually you take abit of time when buying a GPU anyway so you'd thoroughly check shit out and know what you're getting.

But it doesn't help AMD, not one bit.

Brand loyalty is fucking stupid. When it comes time to buy a card, research what's most useful to you with the best features in your pricerange and buy that.

It wasn't that I was loyal to a brand or gave up on it. I just found the naming convention much easier to understand. That is all.

There is absolutely no good reason to fuck the naming like this. Only possible reason is to confuse people.

HD 6870 being slower than HD 5870... what the fuck are they thinking.

Case in point, the dual GPU card is in fact HD 5970

so which card will be the new 5870? the one that would be faster then the 5870 but still close to the top of the line

Yeah guess so

Oh well, unless this generation is as much bang per buck as the 4870 was, I might consider Nvidia instead...

Nvidia announced price drops on GTX 460 and 470, resulting in AMD lowering the launch price of HD6xxx. Hard to say any accurate numbers.

What I meant was, back when the 4870 was new, wasn't it's main competitor the older 8800GTX or the more recent GTX280, which were both much more expensive and offered the same performance?

I remember it beeing a no-brainer

You remember wrong, GTX 280 has never been on par with HD 4870 in terms of performance, it is faster.

And at that time 8800gtx sure wasn't more expensive than the HD 4870. Plus you forgot the GTX 260, which was ~ to HD 4870 in every perspective.

Well in that case I meant the GTX260

Which costed more at the time

But was bit faster too. therefore ~equal to 4870.

Depended on the game. At the time, in nearly all games I was interested in, the 4870 was the better...
