For those of you who have updated and are now using iTunes 10.

I've mostly used iTunes for subscribing to Podcast in the past. But I think I may start using it with my music collection .. to give ping a try.

AFAIK the only to add friends is by their (real) name or email .. so if you care to post one or the other here, do.

This thread is to be used for those interested in sharing their Ping information. Those wishing to bash iTunes, Ping, or Apple in general need not post here.. in this thread.

"Scammers and spammers have deluged the new Ping musical social network, created by Apple and built into the new version of iTunes. Sophos researchers have found that Ping is being overrun by scams and spam messages. 'Apple seems to have anticipated a certain degree of malfeasance, as profile pictures that you upload will not appear until approved by Apple. They are likely filtering for other offensive content as well, so they probably have means in place they could use to stop the spam.' It's ironic that the most common scams on Ping right now revolve around Apple's own iPhone." The Sophos blog post adds that Apple is doing their best to clamp down on the spam, manually deleting many of the offending messages for now. Reader Tootech adds that Facebook integration was quickly disabled, possibly because of blocked API access.

Thank you for the info. I haven't been victim to spam as of yet. A couple common sense suggestions you should apply with any social network. Use a throw away email. .. And turn approvals on. It's the equivalent of putting on a condom before you go fucking the town.

oh hey! im in the OP! thanks, kmar!

im glad itunes is growing and all, but i have a small aesthetic complaint with the new icon (sucks), and the new volume slider (also looks crap. as for ping... well, ive been a hardcore last.fm nerd since its beta-days... im not changing my user habits any time soon!

although, the united efforts of iTunes Genius and Ping could create a pretty decent recommendation/networking platform .

I don't like this update much
Couldn't care less about Ping, I'm all social networked out, last.fm and facebook is good enough. Not a fan of the aesthetics either. Slightly sleeker, but also a bit more clumsier and retro in other areas. That new icon is horrendous, especially when minimized in the system tray.

Buuuuuuuut I suppose I might as well set up a profile and give it a shot. Will PM my e-mail.

This is not a last.fm replacement. Far from it in fact. Although I will admit my first reaction was the same. It is simply another tool discreetly embedded into your existing device/software.  I would not recommend anyone quitting their already-in-place habits for this, but rather, adding it to your toolbelt. With 160 million existing iTunes users it could be powerful, indeed.

I look forward to seeing how Aaron rates his music in his iTunes library. ... and Aaron, if you aren't .. Start. Just a click sil vous plait.

Yea the new icon is crap. It looks like something I could have made in two minutes. It is about time they replaced the cd tho.

kmar, oddly enough my habit of rating/liking songs is limited to my iphone and out-and-about listening...

when sat at a computer listening it's normally always a background process.

we'll see where this thing is at in a month

Hmm, maybe this might spur me to actually rate things more often. At the moment it's more of a "like it or not" deal. 4 stars if I like it, no rating otherwise.
One thing about the ratings that bothered me, though, was that if you rated an entire album, it would give that rating to songs that weren't rated. So even though I'd rate an album 4 or 5 stars, some songs would show up on my "like" list that I really didn't want to.

More like a here come the new iPods tailored update.

No it is not the same thing as ping.fm. Ping.fm is a status syndication site.

Heh. I bet Ping.fm are a little annoyed/etc about this then.

The idea behind the updates sounds pretty cool. i.e. bringing social networking to the player. But I guess I already have last.fm, with info syndicated to my Facebook ... and I'm not sure I could bring myself to change media players. I only really use iTunes to put music on my iPod.

Anybody else reluctant to upgrade because the new icon sucks?

I don't mean to bash, I use iTunes all day every day for music/podcasts/radio/iPod, but Ping seems to be designed for those that buy their music on iTunes(which I don't) so it's useless to me, the only new "feature" I see is the icon which is awful.

the library is a little snappier and the looks have been streamlined a bit- especially in the column browser, which i use all the time.

im also trying really hard to like this ping thing. it has so much potential - if they just integrated in your system of itunes song/album/artist ratings (on the 5 star system) and perhaps compiled a last.fm-esque list of your 'most played' or 'recently listened' artists... then it would make your profile more attractive and actually give a point to browsing around Ping as a social-network. right now i see absolutely no incentive to rate songs in iTunes because it doesn't carry over to the Ping system at all - i have to research for the artist/album/song in question and individually rate them on their separate database. tedious and too much effort. also, as much as im interested in doing so, there really is no point whatsoever in writing 'reviews' for artists or albums... there's simply no way to quick-link to them.

the fact that ping is totally integrated into iTunes is a bit of a fault. i cannot link anyone easily to my profile in the same way i could refer people to a twitter feed or a facebook profile to then 'follow' or 'like' accordingly. instead, people have to go through the hassle - again - of searching through their separate system to find me by name, to then see what i think of 'xyz' music. that's just too much effort when there are too many other competing services. i can compile stats on last.fm, review music on my blog/in print and create playlists and advanced recommendations on spotify... why should i use ping? it doesn't even seamlessly integrate with itunes, the native platform of the service... it's just all so much effort at the moment! it'll never catch on if people have to go to such great lengths to just 'post' something. if i can't 'like' or 'review' an album from my library-window, on the fly... then i never will. i categorically refuse to go to the itunes store and manually search for a song every time i want to recommend it, rate it or review it. ridiculous system.

anyone else have any thoughts? if anything, this has helped me to appreciate last.fm more...

I agree with the previous post. The Apple annoucement should have read "discover what your friends are talking about, listening to, and downloading (within the iTunes store). I thought the software itself was becoming "scroble-like". This would have been very cool if it was built into the player as well. I should have known better. The idea of Apple letting anyone automatically share is contrary to their command and control business model.

In short, it's a gimmick to get you into their store. That may not always be the case, but it is now.

yeah, at the moment i see no incentive to 'like' albums other than to turn my itunes store account into an itunes store advert.

just a quick question - iTunes doesn't support flac yet, does it?

Not that I have to listen in that format, but it's nice to have a player that supports everything

A quick Google search for "iTunes flac" led me to this:

There are a few plugins to do it, but you can't do it naively.

So I tried this Ping thing out. First it wouldn't let me select anything resembling electronic as a genre I like (Apparently children's music is a more widely known genre?), then it only let me choose 10 songs? Not artists or anything, or whats highest played in iTunes (I dont rate things in iTunes with stars, who does that?).

Then.

Then.

After selecting LCD Soundsystem and Interpol songs to see what would happen next, it recommended 50 cent, Keith Urban, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry as artists to follow (the closest to similar music was Death Cab for Cutie and Muse which are kind of similar I suppose).

tl;dr

What the fuck is this crap.

i think you have to have used genius/ping for a while if you want it to be able to accurately recommend music.

last.fm is the same-- if you listen to 5 songs in 6 months the recommendation system isn't going to read your mind.

it's like buying one book from amazon.com, ever, and then complaining the next 10 recommended titles aren't specific to your needs.

also what's wrong with the 'electronic' music tick-box? i listen to more and a wider range of electronic music than anyone here, and it was fine for me...
