So, upgrading blah blah blah

Trying to stick to under 1k CAD with taxes from newegg.ca

For sure parts:
Intel Core i7-930 Bloomfield 2.8GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80601930 - $300
EVGA 01G-P3-1372-TR GeForce GTX 460 Superclocked (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card - $239 (and $10 rebate = price of non overclocked)

or

EVGA 01G-P3-1371-AR GeForce GTX 460 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card - $255 (lifetime warranty)

I dont think I really need the lifetime warranty tbh.  If the card is going to die due to manufacturing reasons its pretty likely it will be within the first two years.  And I might even upgrade it after 2 years, who knows.  Plus the one with a 2 year warranty is much cheaper (almost $30) and is faster...

Unsure parts:
GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard - $230 (Cheapest, most USB ports, doesnt allow DDR3-1600!?)
ASUS P6X58D-E LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard - $250 (More expensive, allows DDR3-1600)

RAM I had a question about.  Apparently i7 supports only up to DDR3-1066, above that you need to overclock?  So, if I wasnt planning on overclocking I should just get DDR3-1066 since I could get better timings for the price?  And I'd be able to get the cheaper motherboard?  But if I did want to overclock, would I be able to use the cheaper motherboard?  It says it doesnt support DDR3-1600 which is what I was going to get.

I recommend lifetime warranty.

Meh.  I dont really think its necessary.  Again, if it runs for 2 years with no problems its pretty likely to be fine for a pretty long time.  And after 2 years I'll probably upgrade.  Plus the other is faster and cheaper.

Mostly this was for a bump

I'd say for for the ASUS mobo. 1. Because I just ordered one and 2. Because ASUS are awesome

This is my main concern, anyone?  Is it necessary to overclock to be able to use DDR3-1600 at its normal speed?  And would the Gigabyte be able to run DDR3-1600 at its normal speed?

Are you planning on overclocking? If so, look for an aftermarket cooler.

I heard the stock i7 ones weren't bad?  If there's a good one for under $30-40 on newegg.ca then I'll consider it.  I have no idea whats good though.

I have an i7-930

Had the stock cooler on it for a while. Does well.. wont be able to OC over 3GHz.

I have a megahalems, works perfectly. (MEASURE YOUR CASE BUT! XD -- I knew i wanted this cooler before i bought the case AND the mobo. It fits with 1mm to spare [with 2 fans] --> See photo <memory cooler>)

You can't go wrong with either gigabyte/asus on quality,

Asus or Gigabyte.

Just do some research and compare the boards

http://www.gigabyte.com.au/service/comp … rison.aspx

http://www.asus.com/ProductGroup2.aspx? … Q4oSEtSu5m

Dont know if the links work but posting quick incase i get banned

E: i have the P6TD Deluxe (Don't forget the additional D), love it, i don't know if it's still available, i know some of the other P6T boards are still availble.

Also, do the whole, filter google results to discussions when you search the board name.
just get the one you think suits your needs and possible wants in the future.

ALSO: Regarding your ram,

1600 imo is an overkill. To push mine from 1333 (which it is now) to 1600, i had to rasie my QPI voltage WAY over what is recommended by intel.

.. i mean WAY over.

bluescreens all round if i didnt.. so it's at 1333, and tbh, there isnt a difference..

... especially with 12GB XD XD

The only time I'd use memory coolers is if I got them for free

That dual Noctua cooler is bad-ass. Bought it on a build for my friend and it took her OC straight past 4.0GHz at manageable temps.

It's expensive, though. Think it's £60 here.

My corshit was overheating until I slapped the cooler on.

With the cpu at 4ghz ofc...

There is something wrong with your sticks if they are overheating without fan, I have DominatorGT 1866MHz ones and they are just fine without the minifans.

I ran my Q9550 @ 4GHz with 4x2GB DDR2-1066 Mushkin sticks and they were perfectly cool and happy. Without any airflow even (water cooled CPU)

I think if you turn on the ram's XMP profile in the bios you can get the rated ram speeds without touching the bclck..assuming your ram supports it.

Also the 'freezer7pro' of i5/i7 is the coolermaster hyper 212 plus. Cheap (about 20 bucks here) and does the job well.
