I've always thought of him as part of the black freedom/oppression/empowerment movement that is couched in Christian language (and is the mainstay of some churches) and sometimes Black Muslim groups ... more of a social movement than anything spiritual.
Then again, most churches are more of a social group than anything spiritual.
