Wow, I seem to be saying this a lot lately: Typical Uzique, doesn't read.

Here's my old thoughts on Starcraft before posting in this topic: It's a pro-multiplayer game that's seemingly solid, fair, and even used as a 'sport' in some places it's that good to some.

I said that the trailer was misleading because of this, without even knowing Starcraft had a story. You then came in and said that the main thing Starcraft was known for is its singleplayer, which I've known not to be true, as until now, I've never even heard it had one. It was at that point the trailer's point became clear to me. All the rave was about the multiplayer and always has been.

This petty argument then shifted on to Starcraft's singleplayer popularity and how it's rarely spoke of, so much so that I've gone years and years of gaming without ever knowing it had a good singleplayer story.

Question my 'gaming credentials' if you want, but Starcraft has never appealed to me because, as said, I'm not interested in hardcore, competition RTS games and that's all Starcraft has ever been portrayed to me in the 9 or so years I've been around on the Internet.

As said, you don't read well enough to see this shift and are just clinging on to something even more pointless than the main themes of our arguments to bitch about. Of course you won't see my point, though, because you're not in a position to understand.

lol, enough said.

and i never asserted the storyline was the "main thing". just that the cinematics aren't misleading because everybody knows there IS a single-player and there IS a rich-lore and universe in which all blizzard games are set. i have never said the single-player is more popular, more widely known or more widely played than the multiplayer... my 'core argument' is that you called a game's cinematic trailer "misleading" when it isn't; it is you that misunderstands, not the hype-videos that mislead.

I'll just assume you used a poor choice of words.

I'm sure you'd agree the following is more appropriate:

"Starcraft has a rich storyline/fantasy universe..."

'has always been known' is clearly appropriate as i am describing the fact that the cutscenes are a TRADEMARK of the STORYTELLING METHOD

beta highlights cannot wait to get into the first few pooling-matches...

what matchmaking leagues are you guys aiming for? copper/bronze/silver/gold/... platinum god-mode?

can't believe this game had a $5k tournament in the BETA phases... unheard of in FPS gaming.

@fflink: it's not deceiving... starcraft has always been known for a rich storyline/fantasy universe (like all blizzard games) and the single-player campaign has cutscenes like the trailer throughout it, driving the story along. for anybody that played the original starcraft, the animated cut-scenes and movie-snippets are awesome and add loads to the game-immersion.
Highlighted point is where you move on to talk about the cutscenes. The former part is your false assumption that everyone knows Starcraft has a great storyline. I'm sure it does, not arguing that, but anyone who hasn't played it wouldn't know this as the multiplayer is the part it's renowned for from all that's said about the game.

This is where my comments stemmed from.

Maybe you should just write better.

maybe you should just read better and understand that 'and' is a connective, not a sub-ordinate clause. they are not independent statements: my grammar is not stating '(1) starcraft has always been known for a rich storyline/universe' AND THEN '(2), independently, it also has great single-player with cutscenes). the and is a connective that connects and relates the two; they are dependent clauses; the game has always been known for its rich-lore and fantasy universe-- tied intrinsically to the fantastic single-player storytelling.

are you seriously going to try and again evade your own misconceptions/misinformation by... trying to argue over writing/grammar with me? silly perhaps you should just admit that you had the wrong impression of this game, because of only hearing about yada-yada from your friends, and you are now aware that starcraft, like all blizzard games, has always been renowned for engaging storytelling and a great intellectual property.

I dont know, the game came with a shitload of character information in the manual and shit (I think it was the manual anyway, I just remember reading character bios when I was like 12). There is no way you could have missed the story/lore aspect without actively trying to. Even just using the internet I am surprised you havent come across references to it.

you do realize, despite everything said about starcraft's great single-player... that multiplayer is the forte of most well-balanced RTS games.

why do you hate it? too hard and competitive? too social?

Actually, I don't like RTS multiplayer in general because you either own or get owned...
2/10 is a balanced match in my experience, the rest is just someone l33t vs someone n00b.. which isn't fun for anyone...

And yes I am the one to get pwn'd more often than not...

I prefer playing against an AI I know I can beat rather than getting my face wiped each time

so you have more fun knowing you can win everytime? ... makes a lot of sense.

btw blizzard has a matchmaking system based on performance and ELO rating systems that matches you against people of your skill.

the community is divided into 'leagues': copper (noobs), bronze->silver->gold, platinum (pros) - and you have to rise/fall through the ranks of your general league before it pairs you up against anyone that is far better or far worse than you. so... yeah. kinda defeats your point.

Yeah I prefer winning each time...

I usually play turtle and from what little I played Starcraft 1 didn't really allow that as a tactic...

I dunno, I'm not particularly hyped for Starcraft II.. I doubt I would even try it if it wasn't for all these fans hyping it...

it's hardly the next apple gadget when it comes to hype, is it? blizzard make fantastic games. starcraft 2 will be an absolutely top-notch RTS.

starcraft is a purist's RTS - an old-school RTS. it's focussed a lot on economy and on excellent macro/micro skills. it really is the best-balanced, most well-developed and most engaging/tactical RTS of them all... it's in another league to most RTS games, e.g. Command & Conquer. the level of skill, practice and gaming-ability to succeed is pretty much unrivalled in its genre. what's not to like about that?

oh, i forgot... you like to win in every game you play

Oh god no don't bring apple into this...

Meh, I played quite abit of CNC3 online when it was new... I know it's nowhere near the same or as balanced/polished.. But I got so fed up with there only beeing 2 types of players.. the rushers or the GDI mammoth spammers x_X

I allways ended up focusing on spamming NOD venoms because they are basically the only thing that can deal with both those tactics... untill they got nerfed

Gah, I don't know.. I liked Supreme Commander 1 because it allowed you to turtle the living shit out of the enemy... build defenses, keep upgrading them, eventually build artillery (which in supcom IS artillery, not just tanks with +2 metres of range...) and start blasting the enemy away...

floppy admits he is an RTS noob and has only played noob RTS games with noobish players, creating noobish frustration... ITT

starcraft's tactics are unrivalled. there is no 'one' method to win, cheaply. no master cheese strat. tech is an intelligent, tactical process working towards the long-term strategy of the game. economy is everything. spamming one unit will not do anything because micro is so important, also. you really can't fault it or blame a noobish game-style / poor matchmaking, which you have seen in other RTS games (i.e. crap and conquer), cause starcraft is specifically designed to outdo these simple problems.

I´ll wait until it drops in price a bit, then buy it for the singleplayer.

I tried my share of online gaming in both SC1 and WC3 and I really sucked. Lots of my friends back then where into those games so I tried to get into them.
I lack the abilities to overlook such grand scale. Managing economy, microing units, adapting and changing tactics, remembering all the counters and abilities, harrassing the enemy... its huge!
