Proposal wrote:

The legislative initiative outlined here is intended to make Iceland an attractive environment for the registration and operation of international press organizations, new media start-ups, human rights groups and internet data centers. It promises to strengthen our democracy through the power of transparency and to promote the nation's international standing and economy. It also proposes to draw attention to these changes through the creation of Iceland's first internationally visible prize: the Icelandic Prize for Freedom of Expression.

English translation of the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative

Interesting development, apparently "[...]inspired and strongly backed by Iceland-based whistleblower website WikiLeaks."

A plus for Free Speech advocates everywhere.
Sure to cause various governments and religious groups varying degrees of annoyance.

Will be interesting to see how this unfolds regarding a) state secrets, ala current Wikileaks mess and b) People drawing cartoons of Muhammed, etc

The question is as you said how far will they take it? It could very quickly get downright dangerous, it will be interesting to see what the NATO reaction is to the inevitable threats if this takes hold.

Of course, if you mess with Iceland, they'll just sink your navy with their volcano cannons.

edit: ...or ground all your Euro flights.

After visiting Iceland last month, the more I think about it the more I'd love to live there.  This just helps that desire along.

Takk fyrir, Iceland!

I must say, from having next to no money 18 months ago they're doing OK.

If they're going to position themselves as a bastion of free speech, more power to them.

f they're going to position themselves as a safe haven for state secrets, child porn, illegal banking, software & media piracy, and partisan propaganda.. they're in for a rough ride

Something like this should probably be done by a nation that isn't an easily boycottable/sanctionable island. IJS.

Well, Svalbard is awesome too, and norway.

I just need to be somewhere where it doesn't get over 25°C in summer, I can't stand hot weather.

Really? Here I don't particularly mind 40C (so long as I don't actually have to do anything)
