If you want to see a "better" section we could try upping the intensity of the moderation significantly. Delete anything that is a personal attack, delete anything that does not significantly contribute, no more OPs with just a news article and two sentences at the bottom, outright ban repeat offenders in a much shorter timeframe, etc. But only if you want it. I'm not going to put more effort into something I don't enjoy doing if it's going to go unappreciated. A lot of posts will be deleted and probably significantly more bans than usual. All of this of course is predicated on your ability to generate content. You have to meet us halfway here. Making genuine topics and taking time with responses is what is going to make or break the changes. Trying to elevate a section only by deleting poor posts and banning members is a terrible way to go about things. You have to take some responsibility for the section as well.
On the other hand do you want to see it maintain its current course?

If you start here and read down you can get an idea of at least I how I moderate DAST right now. The stuff that is clearly over the line is deleted, but I try to leave as much content as possible. Now a lot of times I might have deleted a lot of the posts surrounding and pertaining to the flaming because the embers would only serve to light the fire again, but because the thread is specifically about conduct in DAST those are essentially "points" in this thread, so I left them.
An issue with editing and not actually deleting a post is it is more likely to again bring the fire back from the embers. We delete as if we're cutting out a tumor, if you leave some you might as well have not bothered in the first place. But it might be worth a shot. Opinions?

For future reference: Nothing's going to change. That would require conscious consideration of the implications of what people are posting. Most folks have their heuristics for dealing with the other members, and over the past five years so much has been discussed and done to death that I wouldn't expect anything new to emerge---but hey, surprise me.
