So I just don't see a population that would call for a Mosque, unless they're trying to create a new mecca. Also if it was a church I'd be apposed as well, the churches in the city have been there forever and one was actually a night club.

Interesting little anecdote from another forum.
Something interesting that happened yesterday. My lady and I, niether of us "look muslim" were walking in manhattan near the proposed community center site. It was kind of raining in the evening so she tied a cute little scar around her hair to keep it from getting moist, as we didn't have an umbrella.
A group of angry people were there protesting the place. As we walked by, I started hearing from someone in the crowd, o look at those traitors (we are caucasian complexioned, and presumably the idiots thought other whites that wear even a scarf are traitors of acting and being like muslims). That wasn't the problem. We walked by a section on these people on the sidewalk and one of them purposely bumped my fiance. She is a tiny woman and she almost clung to me in terror. I shoved the man back, and said wtf is his problem. Someone standing behind my punched me on the arm. It was a sucker punch and it hurt like hell. I heard laughing everywhere and i couldnt see the guy who punched me, as other came in the middle and asked us "to be on our way."
I can't imagine these people were new yorkers or have anything to do with nyc. They were there because of hate. Blind blind hate.
I felt embarrased to be american for a moment.
