I dunno, I´m not sure dissidents get imprisoned automatically. I needed to arrest them "by hand". First I branded them as Heretics, so they and their families lose all respect, then I detained them in my prison where they are going to spend the next 5 years as cheap labour force. All bystanders who protested or decided to vote for the other guy got shot on sight by me.
That´s going to teach the miners not to go on strike so willingly the next time. HARHAR!

Right, according to the steam forums, the inability to remap WASD to the pan controls is a conspiracy taht has something to do with special game controllers?

The ppl at the Steam forums are really a new branch of retarded. It´s tropico, not Space shuttle simulator pro 2018. What the heck?

I´d say definitive yes. For 7,50 you get quite some fun. Solid gameplay and a charm of its own.

That´s what I experienced, too.
Best to start off easy. Make sure you build an armory and a base early and raise the wages of the soldiers and generals. After that dot the island with guard posts.
Basic needs like health and religion need to be satisfied in the beginning, at least to a small degree, otherweise the rebels will outnumber you faster than you can train soldiers. Once you got the military safe on your side (the base does work wonders with that) and a considerable amount of guard posts around the island, start your dictatorship.
Make sure you get the secret police and wire tapping edict early on though, so they level up nicely. Helps a great deal when foiling insurgent attacks and uprisings

Dunno about the invasion. I started a game yesterday as a mean dictator, shooting protestors and giving a shit about the needs of the people, just exploiting labour and resources.
After a few years events went outta control. Rebellion, Coup d´Etat and US Cruisers circling my Island.
The dissidents blew up my palace before the US could launch an invasion though, lol. Are there no troops landing or anything?
Nope, the destroyers cruising around are the closest you get. I was hoping for a full on assault
aawwww

At least the blowing up of the palace does take place.

edit: Something else, does anyone not hear the speeches and random radio news, too? A friend of mine plays the game in german, and he gets regular news flashes and all the speeches he´s holding via audio. I play in english and get nothing?
I hear loads of speeches and radio now. But didnt yesterday, maybe it updated during the day.

Never played SC3000, but this one seems less micro like Vilham mentioned. After you got the basic needs covered, you spend most of the time "styling" the existing city or planning the next expansion.
It strongly depends on what leadership style you chose, being a world open businessman or a paranoid dictator.

I´m still working on "perfecting" one city though, still got deaths due to poor health care and high pollution at times.

You dont need to deal with water supply at all, and there is only one powerplant which you can also extend the range of with substations (no power lines). Not nearly as much micro as other have said. Much more about how you govern than what you govern.

Rather than being a "make the best city in the world" game it is more "make a functioning city and govern it how you want". Sometimes it is more of a challenge staying in office/alive than providing power or jobs although they are of course related.

This is going off my extremely poor memories of SC2000, so if SC no long has underground water pipes and electricity poles etc above ground then ignore this whole post.

lolz, the only deaths I seem to get are from starvation. It doesn't matter how many farms/ranches/fisheries I place.

You need a marketplace to sell your food to your own citizens. People still seem to starve though, and it doesnt really affect anything.

You don't have to have marketplaces, it just means people don't have to travel to farms to get food, it gets delivered there. I normally have 2-3 marketplaces.

I´m not sure to get it tbh. I like Tropico 3, but there isn´t really much to see. After a handfull of played islands, you saw everything. I still drop the occasional round or two, just not sure the expension is worth it to me. Might get it in a bargain though, I can hardly resists those on steam
